Forgot to mention... One of the two fiberglass discs from the access holes was laying in the gas tank well when I pulled the tank out. Looks like they used a regular hole saw with a 1/4" pilot bit. Another neat piece of history.

The next question is, how do get a shock off of a 50 year old car? I would think they are good and tight with some corrosion on the shock threads. If you can get a socket or wrench on the bolt on the shock, what do you turn? Grab the shock with a pipe wrench?

Thanks for the discussion guys. I have since been able to determine that the holes have nothing to do with the shocks. After the tank is in place and the cover is attached the holes are inacessable except from underneath. I can't see any reason they are there except for ventalation. I'm going to cap the larger ones using covers simular to the caps used in the trunk. For the smaller "vents" I'm going to cut to fit filter cloth and glue it in. May not be exactly like factory but will surely be functional. Thanks again!!

            John -

I wouldn't recommend doing that. Those large holes are there for a reason - they ensure that the gas tank compartment gets constant ventilation; without them, that cavity can become a serious hazard (and if the cover isn't completely sealed around the cavity, you'll have a fuel smell in the cockpit all the time).

I agree with John. GM put those holes in there for a reason. The last thing you want is gas fumes building up is a closed cavity. Leave the hoes as they are. They're not hurting anything. -Dan-

I don't see any advantage to be had from putting filter cloth over those holes. And if, for any reason, that filter cloth became blocked, you will have created a very dangerous condition in that fuel tank area. I wouldn't do it.

Good advice, I'd rater have a little dirt rather than gas fumes. Thanks for the repies!
