Guys, I need help! I am restoring a 62 and have removed the gas tank for cleaning. After removing the tank there are several sizeable opening in the compartment that appear to be factory. 2 where the straps mount, 2 large round openings left and right and 3 round stacked in the center. Do these openings get some kind of a cover or screen? These openings left unobstructed seem to allow moisture and dirt to enter. Help!!!

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
they need no coverings if the tank cover is sealed--i apply a thin film of caulk to the underside of the cover before fastening it to the floorpan. the pair of holes to access the rear shock fastners do need covered--i use heavy duty masking tape. good luck,mike- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
The openings are too allow for air circulation to make sure gas fumes do not build up. Any water will drain out. Just make sure the cover is well sealed, and the shock access holes get covered, as #14 says. -Dan-- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
John, the shock top access holes are just back of the gas tank cover. 2 round holes. At least this is the configuration on my 57.
CC and probably others sell paper/cardboard pasties that are at least somewhat correct to cover the holes with. You do need them or water can come up into the top compartment. Or just use making tape as Mike suggested. -Dan-- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
Well John, looks like the design was changed at some point. Look under it and see how access to the top shock studs is made. But there still should be several holes in the compartment for air circulation. -Dan-- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
The only holes for circulation are the two large holes on either side under the tank and the three in a row down the center under the tank, then where the hold down straps attach at the front under the tank. They may be original shocks and I don't have time to jack up and get under now.- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
After reading this thread I to was looking for the access holes. The picture is from the bottom of my 1960 and I think all of the holes are as John described and under the gas tank. Were the shock access holes not in the gas tank area, but in the soft top storage area just behind the gas tank area cover?
Thanks,

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
The shocks fasten to the cross member right above the rear tires. The recess area in your body is for this cross member. So you need to look at your frame and see what that looks like. Must be the design was changed sometime after 57.
p.s. your undercarriage looks wonderful. I can appreciate the time and work you must have spent doing this. -Dan-- Top

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
Same here on my may 62 as with Johns car. I put my shocks in and did everything from under the car. No access holes involved.

Re: 62 gas tank compartment
Don,
I installed my 62 shocks with the body in place. I was able to slip the rubber cushion/washer, and nut in place with my finger through the holes, then got a wrench in there to tighten everything. All of this was done from under the car.
