There have been dozens and dozens of threads on original vs. repro teak steering wheels. I think this was one of the best:

Teakwood steering wheels do not have a part number stamped in them nor do the plastic ones. Therefore, a reproduction wheel made using an original core (ie SS spokes and 3/8" steel outer rim) are extremely difficult to distinguish from an original particularly if the reproduction is carefully made using the proper dimensions, materials and quality workmanship.
An unrestored original will show signs of deterioration and discoloration at the intersection of the spokes and the Teak. Also the Rosewood bands deteriorate with time since they are very thin (.040") but they can be replaced with new ones during restoration.
Some reproductions are made using reproduction cores and they are easily distinguished by the way the spokes have been machined. The cut outs in the spokes have sharper edges and the vertical milling marks and not there as in the originals.
Quality repoductions also use "forest" Teak rather than plantation Teak and Brazilian Rosewood and not some other darker wood for the inner and outer bands. Also, the joints in the Rosewood must be correct and the finish as well.
Bottom line, a restored original and a quality reproduction on an original core are extremely difficult to distinguish from one another and since there is not a part number, it is a subjective rather than objective decision.
