I am a little cornfused, why is that 1st 68 bracket orange if its for a BB. Didn't they all have alum. intake manifolds therefore silver brackets. I have seen them orange before also. Maybe for other BB cars?

The bracket was not painted before it was installed. It got whatever paint was applied around it. The engine hung from the hooks shown on the right in John Hinckley's photo above, and when the engine was painted some paint got on the lift bracket. Depending on the person applying the paint and the engine the bracket could have been orange or silver or some of each on different sides. Do not try to over analyze this. The engine lifting brackets were a tool to support the engine at the engine plant and at the car assembly plant. Once the engine was placed int he chassis their job was done.

Those big blocks with aluminum heads have no place on the rear of the head for the rear lifting bracket. There are no threaded holes in those heads. How was the rear of those engines supported?

There is a picture on this page -- but this is for a manual transmission. M40 will not have the bracket shown on the right.

I don't recall what was done on aluminum-head Corvettes, but the ZL-1 Camaros we built at Norwood had a lifting bracket on the right rear - see the Camaro ZL-1 engine on the left in the photo below.

My 69 L-68 has a bracket on the pass. rear head, does the 3x2 setup have a intake front driver side bracket or was it removed to be correct?

In an earlier post by Dick
On Corvettes 1968 1969 L68 L71 L89 all front engine lift brackets were removed.
The only bracket that is left is the rear bracket that is currently bolted to the rear back head.

The front lift bracket on those engines Dick and Grant cited was removed on the assembly line after the engine was set in the chassis because the fuel line for the 3x2 carb set up interferes with the lift bracket (or if you want to look at it another way -- the lift bracket interferes with the fuel line). It would be interesting to see someone try to install both, but the factory didn't.

My very late '68 427 390hp (25,613) has the 3969829 front lift bracket. Painted orange. Exact configuration as Grant's photo above.

Grant, excellent work on the pics of the various year applications. I am doing a frame off on a 70 LS-5 that was missing the brackets, so I need both for a 70. I had 2 front lift brackets and was going to use one, but after seeing your post, I would like to offer them to someone who can use them on the correct application: one is like your early 68, the other is like your 68-69 example with the small hole. Would love to find someone with 70 brackets that can use one or both of these front brackets.

Here is what I have come up with after searching and looking at original Big Block cars over the many many past years in trying to figure out what is correct for my June 68 care.

68 early? No hole and no part number, Could be for early 68 to April 68
68/69 Hole and part number 3969829 Stamped horizontal on the back May 68 and up to 69 This is what was put on my 68 June car.
70 to 73 part number stamped on the back 3994055 horizontal and a V?
74 to 75 part number stamped on the front and on an angle and horse shoe stamped on the back.
So I hope I got it right. Just a note repops are not even close.
The silver painted one 3969829 is on my car.

What are the chances of putting a little something together for Vinnie for The Restorer? Maybe I can get some small block lifting brackets together to round out the story. I think the story would have interest to many more of our members, and a plug like "as found on the TDB" might get us more of our members here as well.

I have collected a few SB Chevrolet engine lift bracket over the years and found there were several suppliers.
The "U" brackets have the following stampings: "horse shoe", "S", "L", "KPI", and one without any stamping.
The small 90-degree brackets have the following stampings: "horse shoe", "S", "M" inside a large "C", "K", "A.I.D." inside a circle.
The small 125-degree brackets have the following stampings: "M" inside a circle, "K".
