    58 Temp Sending unit/283/230

My temp gauge at start up jumps to 210 and does not come down until the heat is circulating good, is this a gauge problem or do I need a new temp sending unit?, Thanks, Brad.

I have a similar problem. A few minutes after the 58 is started the gauge jumps to 220. My temp gun shows the car is much cooler than that. The gauges were just done so I have a new temp sending unit being delivered tomorrow.

    Best,
    Dave

Wouldn't hurt to check the coolant level if you haven't already.

I did have to top that off but not much. Brad.

At start up temp will be room temp . Either sending unit or gauge , sending unit easier to check first .

            Brad -

If it tuns out you need to replace the sending unit, try the Wells TU-5 at Autozone. It works just fine in my 60 283/230.

Thanks guys, what type of sealant to use on the threads before installing so as to not affect the reading? Thanks, Brad.

                Brad,

I just replaced the sender this afternoon. Didn't put any sealant on it (and no leaks). The one that came off had teflon tape. That's a no no.

Not necessarily - NPT threads in that application provide excellent ground continuity, even with tape or dope. If it's goobered on heavily enough to interfere, it'll make the gauge read colder, not hotter.

John, are you saying that Paragon or C.C. unit can take some type of sealant, what would you use to keep from seeing coolant seepage after install? Thanks, Brad.

                      Brad -

I've always used a light film of TFE pipe dope on NPT fitting threads (before assembly). If the threads are in good shape, it doesn't take much torque to get a good seal.

Thanks John, forgot to ask can I take old temp unit out without any water flow or do I need to drain down radiator a bit? Thanks again.

You need to drain the coolant level down to below the level of the sending unit, or be really nimble; all the coolant above the level of the sender will come out of that hole as soon as you loosen the sender.
