    Engine Shut Down

    Hello
My car ia a 1962 327 340 hp. When I get on a parkway and in second gear shifting about 3800 to 4000 rpm the engine turns off before I can shift. turning the key it starts right back up. If I shift without bringing to those rpms it's fine.I checked the wires at the distributor and the starter everything is tight. Any sugestions ? Thanks

      Joe -

Has this behavior just started or did it follow some other work done on the car? Does it occur in any other gear? Have you checked the glass fuel filter?

Joe, almost sounds like the engine maybe running out of fuel under load.Higher RPMS require alittle more fuel. check fuel pump pressure and filter, May not be keeping up with demand.

Make sure you don't have any kinks in any rubber fuel lines. Maybe getting sucked shut under load.

i would check the engine harness for a short. start with the wiring as it comes out of the firewall, maybe shielding is rubbing.

see if it will RPM just using light part throttle. if you can run it up at part throttle i would check the fuel pressure.

As Tom suggested the fuel line on the 62 has a rubber hose connection between the long line and the gas tank need to check this hose.

I had a problem with my 62 cutting off intermittantly. All it took was acceleration or hitting a small bump.

It turned out to be a poor connection on the ignition switch. Simple to remove, clean and eliminate as a problem.

PS: I believe I found it by having a meter on the coil as I drove it then traced it back to the switch.

Actually three rubber hoses; 1) tank to metal line that extends through the body (hose is under the gas tank cover) 2) from that metal line to the long metal line that extends along the frame, and 3) from the forward portion of that line to the fuel pump.
I'd not worry about the first two. The third; some reproductions are too long, and end up kinking when you try to route them from the long line to the fuel pump. There's also a 45 degree fitting on the pump that receives that. Sometimes individuals will not include that fitting, or will configure it at the wrong angle.
