    Barrett Jackson Palm Beach Auction

I was watching the auction last night and noticed a few nice looking C2's that sold in the 30's and low forties. Is it the economy or are the prices falling, it seems to me the cars sold are around fifteen thousand off where they were not long ago..

Tim, I noticed the same thing. Not just the C2's it seemed like all the cars and trucks that went pass the block were a little light on the final sale.

I was in Charlotte yesterday and there were a few C2s there for sale. None were NCRS quality but a couple were nice drivers. Prices went from $35k to $42k. Looked to me to be pretty much in line for what they were.

Just finished appraisals on several muscle cars (none of them Corvettes) and opinion of value is off quite a bit in the last 12-18 months. Appraisal on one of them was less that the cost of restoration. One was off almost $75k from what it would have been worth two years ago..

I recently bought a classic car that was newly, totally restored in 2005 and sold for $64,000 at auction. It now is just the same, only a few miles on it since restoration, and it sold for less than 1/2 what it did at that Russo-Steele auction in 2005. Very steep depreciation on classic cars is now the norm it seems.

Just saw a gorgeous Trophy Blue '66 425hp coupe go for $56k, restored with original motor. Earlier a '70 Olds 442 convertible 365hp went for $165k. Looks to me like vettes are falling out of favor with the collector crowd.

Good news for collectors/pack rats like me, bad news for speculators and my kids that are already contemplating the auction when I croak.

Those 442 'Verts are like solid gold if they have the W30 package. They are the "in" cars these days.

makes me wish I had kept the 68 olds 442 my parents bought new and offered to me, I had no room to keep when I was in school also should have kept my 68 olds cutlass supreme with the ram rod motor (W-31) I had in college which I bought from original owner, newer seen one since in a supreme, most in cutlass s or f-85. Also should have kept my 68 ss396 camaro, 70 W-30 with 4.33 gears and alum w-27 differential, 68 firebird 400, and all the 67 and 70 vettes I had over the years....oh well enjoyed them all and sold to move on to next car so I enjoyed the cars back in the day when they were only 1-2 years old and CHEAP...

                    Isn't that the truth.
Lucky for me, when I sold my 1970 Boss 302 in 1982 .... I was smart enough to hold firm on the sale price of $1,750.

                      In 1978, I sold my 70 LS6, 4 speed Chevelle with 30K original miles for $2000. Hindsight is 20/20.

I sold the '67 L79 Coupe I bought new in '67 for $3000 in 1969 (It stickered at $4995 new; I paid $4130 for it). I bought stock in the company I was working for with the proceeds, and I was very lucky to be able to sell that stock two years later for what I paid for it. Luckily, I was able to buy another nice '67 L79 Coupe in 1987 before the prices went crazy. Paid $12.500 and was very lucky to get it. The first car was Sunfire Yellow (the wife was vey insistent), and the later car is Goodwood Green. I like the green better. I have a Safari Yellow '68 convertible I like a lot, but not on a C2 coupe.

                          Woulda', shoulda', coulda':

In the 80's I sold a one previous owner, original paint, 396/375 '68 SS Camaro for $3000. to buy a local, well known 4066 original mile '63 Fuelie convertible, which I still have. Oh why oh why didn't I just get a 90 day note?

Biggest screw up in my automotive history was going and looking at a local bloodhound's latest finds in mid 80's......... a 70 LS6 El Camino with THE original engine & paperwork, a '69 L71 Convertible Corvette with the original engin gone and front end gone also, and a rough as hell ZL1 Camaro with a TON of paperwork and the location known of the original motor that was owned here locally when new. I had enough play money to buy two of the three and passed on the ZL1. It's the hugger orange car that just sold at the RM/Milton Robson collection late last year. Original owner is a friend and still lives here. I guess he's the one who really screwed up by selling it in the first place, since it was a 16th birthday present from his mom who drove to Colorado in her Coupe D'Ville and bought it new and flat towed it back to Georgia on a bumper hitch with the driveshaft out. The '69 Corvette conv. turned out to have a fairly twisted & bent frame and I ended up selling it for what I paid for it a short time later, but the ZL1 was gone and efforts to retrieve it fell short. The $418K it fetched at the recent auction didn't make it a viable option either, but made my previous pass at $3K for the hull and paperwork even more sickening in retrospect, especially since I knew the car firsthand when new.

As long as we're into testimonials:

I locked in a "hedge price" with my heirs some time back as to a dollar amount I wanted them to give my wife for my 63 Vette. She has never driven it, nor ridden in it for so long I can't remember, yet she has been the biggest supporter through the years of keeping it even during tough times. She knew how much it meant to me as it has intrinsic value beyond any market value. My buddy and I, while in the Army, bought it new on a 50/50 investment basis. We shared it through the years; he having it while I was in SEA, I when I needed it upon my return or when he had no place to garage it. He passed away in 1976 from a brain anurism and his wife, knowing that he wanted me to have it and take care of it, sold me his half for $10.00. I rehabed it in the mid 70's with new (same color) paint and a few other cosmetic upgrades and NOS trim parts to "re-establish" it's value. It still has only 44k on the ticker and runs like a top. It has a lot of memories as he and I traveled the southwest with it during our posting at White Sands, NM. It's a part of the family and I would never sell it.
