The rear [VIN derivative stamping] should be centered on the front edge of the jounce bumper bracket, about 3/8" in from the outboard side of the frame rail. Clean off the top surface of the frame and use a small mirror.

Although this thread is concerned with '63 MY, the pic also shows where the rear stamping is located on my late, late (hey, Mike Ward ) '65, and I've never been able to get feedback from other '65's as to when the changeover occured.
