1963 VIN stamp on frame.

I'm sure many have seen VIN stamps on the frame, but I had the opportunity to see a stamping on a 63 frame that was for sale at my swap meet this past weekend. Thought I'd post a picture for you all to see.

The stamp was on the top side of the driver's side rail about 12 inches from the rear frame end cap.

Story was told that this frame was recently rolled out from under a 340 HP convertible that was in pretty good shape. Frame was replaced for a tube chassis resto mod.

Nice Stamp Tom... That owner needs to grind that out or put the frame in storage. Otherwise he may find that a buyer in the future will use the frame to get a duplicate title issued against that VIN.

Refresh my memory -- when did they start to add the model year prefix ?

Tom -- did you check for location #2 (kick-up over rear axle) ?

There was nothing there. I was told by the seller of the frame that 63's did not have the stamp there ?

Just curious about asking price, condition, and what was included. I've been kinda looking as I will need to at least repair mine at some point and have been keeping an eye on prices as data points.

Hopefully the swap meet went well and you got the place back in order without too much trouble. I'm sure many were very thankful that you stepped up to the plate on hosting the meet.

The frame was actually a complete roller with front suspension and rear differential. Nice solid frame. Asking price was about 6K.

That seller was wrong.....should be both places.

Wayne, I think the year began to precede the S in 1965 as in "5 S I x x x x x". 63 and 64s didn't use the year. Somewhere there is a 64 frame with that same VIN number stamped on it. The only difference would be the body mounts and eBrake configuration on the frame.

We looked that frame over for 45 minutes, there was for sure no second number. Can't say I've ever seen the upper number on a 63. Mine has none there either.

Joel -

The rear one should be centered on the front edge of the jounce bumper bracket, about 3/8" in from the outboard side of the frame rail. Clean off the top surface of the frame and use a small mirror.

I'll bet it's there. If you would remove the tire and slide a 3" wire wheel in a dotco between the frame and the body and give it a few bursts of air, the wheel would clean the frame off enough to make the numbers visible.

If your body is too close, you could loosen the mount bolts and jack the body up about a 1/4" to make room for the wire wheel.

I found the VIN on my '67 frame with the body on. It was the one near the drivers seat. So I cleaned the frame off real good in that area, then put a light coat of grease there to act as a release agent.

Then I applied some fiberglass body filler to a wooden paint stirrer, placed it directly over the VIN # and pressed down real hard and didn't move for 10 minutes until the filler had set up.

Now I had a fiberglass impression of the number that I can show anyone and here is the number below. But in real life the # is backwards, so I had to do a photo shop mirror image and flip the # back around so you can see it. PT

Wish I could get another look at the one that was here Sunday. I looked all over for another number, but could not locate it. Never tried any brushes or cleaners though.
