Richard, That second deal went down in '88 eh? The name of the salesman wasn't Jerry Lundigren, by any chance?

Please understand that in 1988 I was still young and stupid about many things in life. I trusted the dealer to turn in the paper work to the State and since I live in Illinois, 2 months did not seem excessive to receive a car title. It was only after the fact that I realized how bad the situation could have been. I had the Corvette, a paid receipt, a copy of my cashed check and the license plates from my 84 Corvette on my new one. The bank on the other hand had the original Certificate of Origin, but no car.
I have always wondered how all of this would have worked itself out if the dealer had gone under, and he eventually did. Bottom line was that the banker called me back about 1 & 1/2 hours later and informed me that he had fixed the problem and I would be receiving the title soon. I don't know this to be fact however, I have always assumed that the banker informed the dealer that he was not going to be party to fraud and unless the dealer came up with the $30 thousand plus for the Certificate of Origin, he would be turned in to the authorities. Regardless, I did receive the title and a couple of years later the dealer went under. In hind site there were a lot of signs that this dealer was in trouble. In 1979 he built a new dealership, this was at a time when interest rates were double digit. By 1987 he only had used vehicles in his new car showroom. The owner of the dealership was also the only salesman and his brother was the mechanic. Now all of this sounds like a very small dealership however, it was a large facility for a city of over 20 thousand and the family had owned delerships since the 1920's. Dad and Grampa had established a good reputation over the decades however, bad times and bad business decisions were the owners downfall.
