Window Stickers Dealer copy Vs Factory???

Can anyone shed some light on this for me: I am under the impression that the factories shipped the cars to the dealers with the window stickers attached? Correct? Why have I heard about dealer issue window stickers that the dealers typed the Vin# in place of the factory ink stamped window stickers? Would this be the case if the factory original was damaged or lost? Has anyone heard or seen examples of this?

I'm not familiar with that (dealer supplied sticker), but I can see a rationale...

It was Federal Law that cars new from the factory bear the MANUFACTURER SUPPLIED sticker. So, what was a dealer to do if a car in transit had its side window glass damaged? Same would apply to inventory at the dealership that suffered vandalism...

You gotta believe it happened. I'll bet anyone who worked as a Zone Dealer knows the answer to this one!

Dealer-created replacement window stickers weren't uncommon - if the factory-installed sticker was damaged in transit from rolling the window down and up, for instance, the dealer would create a new one for that car that was readable for a unit that was to be placed on the showroom floor. They either had the blanks or got them from the Zone office.

They're easy to spot, as the originals were created on a high-speed IBM line-printer with a unique font, not on a typewriter.

My 'early' (#4935, May 1983) 1984 was shipped to my selling dealer without the window sticker attached. It came via courier/mail just prior to the car itself being delivered from Bowling Green. I still have the unmounted sticker which includes the perforations intact as it is a multi-part form. The wording on the back reads 'This is the dealer copy-remove and save'. (The back sheet would be the dealer copy and the front sheet went in the windshield.) I was fortunate my salesman was a true 'car guy' and recognized the importance of this bit of detail so he grabbed it before the prep people installed it and gave it to me. I asked why it was sent separate and was told at the time they were still finalizing option costs for the 'new' '84s and some cars were shipped before that was finally determined. Not sure how many vehicles were affected by this situation but I know mine was...

sometimes new cars come in with a sticker stating. "this car the property of general motors" and no window stickers but they were later supplied to the dealer

            Hello Clem;
Does your comment pertain particularly to cars delivered to dealers before announcement day ?
Not allowing dealer personnel to sell the vehicle ?

most likely but the window sticker was not on the car so it must have come to the dealer later

Our '99 Suburban, ordered by us Dec. 97, and delivered in early '98 to Tom Jumper Chev in Atlanta came in with no sticker and it was not received by the dealer when we took delivery.

That was quite common - we put thousands of those stickers on cars that were built before the pricing (and EPA/DOT certification and fuel economy numbers) were finalized/certified. When the info was finalized, the correct stickers were printed for each car and mailed to the dealers.

In the summer of 1980 I did see a dealer installed window sticker. It had been made with use of a typewriter and a blank 1980 Corvette window sticker. When I inquired about this "odd" looking sticker I was told by the salesman that this Corvette had been ordered in the Fall of 1979 and that since that time there had four price increases from GM. Thus, each time GM increased the price the dealer would make up a new "dealer" window sticker. I bought my 1980 from another dealer however, in 1988 I went back to this same dealer and ordered a new Corvette. When the new Corvette came in I wrote a check and went on may merry way. About 2 months later I received a call from the dealers bank wanting to know when I was going to return the Corvette that I had taken on a "test drive" two months before! Since the dealer and I both used the same local bank it did not take long to discover what the dealer was doing. He sold me the Corvette, cashed my check and then told the bank the Vette was ordered for floor stock and after providing the certificate of origin received a second check from the bank for the same car. Every time the banker came by the dealership and asked where the Corvette was they told him it was out on a test drive.

Re: Window Stickers Dealer copy Vs Factory???

While selling Corvettes at Palmyra Motors (12-500)the Buffalo Zone, if we asked they would send us a "new replacement window sticker" we never made a duplicate from a blank. Maybe some other dealers did, but you realize what a shady dealer could do if they were printing their own stickers in the office of the dealership. Now I am not talking about the BS additional add ons some dealers charged for back in the day. (Oh yeah, some still do that).
We had some bullet holes, radios stolen in Corvettes from train, spares tires stolen off the trains, and transport trucks. No broken windows.

If need be a dealer could always make a copy of the dealer copy that came with the invoice and MSO then put that on window. Included in picture is a late 70's Property of General Motors sticker and copy of a 79 Corvette window sticker and Dealer Copy & MSO. One more thing, I removed alot of window stickers for customers so they could save them, I would soak the back side of sticker with aerosol window cleaner, a few minutes later it would peel off perfectly in one piece. Hope this helps.Save the Wave.

you are lucky as some buyers ended up paying for the car the second time because the dealer went out of business and the car was never paid for. how did you get a title ??

The" Property Of " sticker measures 3x5 inches and was on all cars that left the factory before announcement day. it has Rev.7-68 in the lower corner.
