    67 tach question

    my tach has a red line of 6300 rpm-my car came with a 427-390hp engine and powerglide trans.I thought the redline was different for this car?

    Re: 67 tach question

    Yellow line should start at 5700 rpm, red should start at 6000 and end at 6200- at least for manual trans. This 427/390 automatic says it was top flighted, so I'm guessing it's the same for auto. I've never heard of a 6300 redline.

        Mark -

        Tach has been changed; the one you describe was only used on L-71's, L-89's, and L-88's.

          Hmmm, with the 80 lb oil pressure gauge, it may be that the entire instrument cluster was changed.....?

          There is a white label with red letters on the backside of the cluster, about 3"W x 1-1/2"H with a 2 letter designation in large font then smaller font description. The cluster pictured from a L71 435HP has the 6500 RPM tach and 80 lb oil gauge.

          "LB" is for L71 and other solid lifter engines which use the 6500 tach & 80 lb oil gauge. I'm told "LA" is for standard tach and 60lb gauge. I am told "LC" is another code but I am unsure of it's application. Maybe speed warning buzzer option?

          The rear speedo/tach cover also has a date code. It may tell you if there is a major delta between car build and cluster build.

            This is a cluster sticker "LC" for a 427/390 NO speed warning option. Red lettering. Its for an April 10 build date coupe. 60# oil pressure.
            LA = base engine
            LB = L71 L88
            LC = L36 L79 L68

            I don't know the designations for "Speed Warning Option" I believe the tag will be green lettering.

                Stephen, Coincidentally that cluster was dated 44 years ago yesterday.

                Ray, Too bad the latest catalog doesn't have that info, at least not apparent when I looked.

                p.s. Good info in this thread. I remember searching for this reference material 5 months ago and couldn't find it in the archives.

                  Anybody out there that has a 67 speed warning option cluster that would post the cluster sticker data along with engine type???

                    Mark,

                    If you have a 66, the 80lb oil pressure gauge would be correct with a 390 HP. For 67 with 390 HP, the gauge would be a 60lb.

                    As mentioned, your tachometer is incorrect for a 390 HP though.
