Dennis - Working on and restoring old cars is FUN and of course can cost some $s. The good thing is you can choose to join the NCRS if you buy a Corvette and drive it because you always wanted to and/or you can buy one and restore it to NCRS Judging standards and have it judged; so you can "be in for a dime or in for a dollar" as the saying goes.

Meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy the hobby and not buy any "stupid" air filters right now; but I am going to get over to Mark's before he burns my cheesburger to a crisp. BTW, I'm sure he's really a good cook or his wife is because he looks like he hasn't missed many meals.

    Having fun, Pete

      Pete,
There's probably only a few of us that know just how much fun you are having and its more like strip steak being very close to the best beef in the world right now

      Terry,
I am sure we agree also going to agree that it is "BEST WAY..." printed, how about embossing with AC212CW?

Talk about OCD. Lighten up, Francis. I'd bet you would feel better if you took your significant other out for dinner and forgot about Corvettes for an evening or, are you saving the dinner money for an air filter?
Mark, I'm one of those guys that likes to have as many correct parts on my car as possible. I work hard for my money and while I recently purchased an NOS set of redlines for my 67, I can see how most would not understand how this makes sense seeing that I will be only gaining three points for such a large purchase. I can only explain it this way, it makes me happy and isn't that what it's all about?

Yes, the factory air filter for 1970-72 open element has "BEST WAY" and the raised AC 212 CW in the black plastisol. I would post a picture, but my computer has been jazzed (I actually wanted to use another word, but this is a family forum) by a virus and my pictures are all there but under different names. I have posted a picture in another thread on this same subject in the past. Hint, hint.

If that was the 70 part, how do we explain ... same year, same metal, same best way, except no ac212cw embossing? An oops where a top tray got into the process (set of bottom trays) and would appear identical except that???

And perhaps the groove is a little different too(the onset of Migrane212).

From what data set did this post originate (last year)?)...

It surely seems there are many opinions on what is correct for a given era when it comes to these filters. Within the National Corvette Restorers Society, there is a general consensus that, based on seen AC engineering data, the square mesh probably started around the end of model year (MY) 1969 or the beginning of MY 1970. That is to say, somewhere around the beginning of calendar year 1970. I will try to secure said data if I can and post it here when I do.

Thank you Paul. Yes, that is the thread I was thinking of. My post #21 and Mark's better photos in #22. I simply don't have the time here at work to look for those.

Hey Mark, how does it feel to know all the nut jobs in this organization?

Don't be offended I "work" with a bunch of nut jobs too. I can't imagine what a sane person like me is doing in this crowd of nutcases.

Terry's writing this from the pub no doubt! Here's to a little shamrock that has the time line on how these filters changed over the years!

Oh and those filters from Pete - notice he's quiet? Where is he?

Hint - he's oxidizing filters to look 50 years old in the only place on Earth the ozone layer permits rapid oxidation. The problem is they turn a little browner that we like - you know that cream yellow look sells filters!

As John Cleese in a skit The Village Idiot on Monty Python said.

"I maybe and idiot but I am not stupid"

But then as Curly said and its happened to me.

"I'm trying to think but nothing happens"

Good to see you guys can have fun..sometimes it can be seen as the corvette police are coming! Kinda intimidating..Anyhow..this is very interesting since I never thought of the detail one could get into when going to complete original..I just got my car last May..I have found that I have a pretty original car with a good amount of paper work..so now my quest has begun to start the detail things of my car..so I ask is the air filter something I should pick up if I find one in a garage sale or Carlisle..or should money be better spent on tires or exhaust..I guess it answers the question for me since I think the air filter would be like the cherry on top of the perfect ice cream cone..I know I got a good bit of work to do before I can splurge on a 400$ filter..I hope to see more fun posts like this one with good info in it..
                          Thanks

                            Re: Air filter anyone???

                            Rich,

The first thing you might want to do is decide what you want to do with your Corvette.

Few people know or care what these details mean. Unless you intend to bring your Corvette to where these few people are, and ask for their evaluation (the process known as judging). money spent on a $400 or $1200 air filter is a waste. I dare say anyone spending that kind of money on an air filter is unlikely to use it for its intended purpose. It will be a display item.

If you intend to bring your Corvette for that evaluation you might want to first learn about the judging process (buy the Judging Guide and Judging Reference Manual), download the appropriate judging sheets for your year Corvette from this site, come to a few judging schools either at your local chapter or at Regional or National events, and lastly evaluate where you can spend the least money for the maximum point gain on your Corvette. All that will be a long, several years, process.

                            Welcome to the insanity.

Actually, I don't think this AC212CW air cleaner element is correct for 1965-69 Corvettes, except possibly very late 1969. It is correct for 1970-72, though. 1965-69 used a bias mesh, soldered screen. 1970-72 used the "square" mesh style.

Do the airfilters with expanded metal like those shown in the posts 21 and 22 of the previous string have any value, or are only those with round wire of any use?
