Which filter? The one on the 400 mile 1972? Because it matches the ones I have seen on a number of other low mile 1970-72s. The last version of the 1970-72 described the features of the factory air cleaners.

Thsi filter would not get all the points on a midyear, they had the replace with part number instructions debossed into the rubber...someone posted a pic here once...

        Terry,
        348 or 212?

Open or closed (dual snorkel) or single snorkel air cleaner asy?

Do they have any embossing on them at all??? Some do and some don't in this same time period.

How many points is a $416 air cleaner element worth? Is it really going to add to the resale value of the car? Is this just an example of the ultimate manifestation of OCD? I realize many have their cars perfected to the point of only being left to deal with service items, valve stem caps and the like...but I'm really trying to figure out exactly why some people are willing to pay so much money for a stupid air filter, other than simply that they can?

Why's the air filter stupid, Dennis? Have you had these violent reactions to inanimate objects long? Have you experienced this disdain of people spending their own money as they see fit, all your life?

Talk about OCD. Lighten up, Francis. I'd bet you would feel better if you took your significant other out for dinner and forgot about Corvettes for an evening or, are you saving the dinner money for an air filter?

I'm sorry I offended you Mark, or anyone else for that matter. My apologies. I think I'll just go buy a brand new regular A212CW air filter down at the AC Delco store and take my wife to dinner.

I have never seen the judging sheets. Can somebody tell me how many points are deducted for having a new air filter? I thought service items were expected to be changed after 42 years........

                Dennis,

Here's where the judging sheets are located:

It is true that the average 42 year old Corvette probably won't have the original air filter or one with the original configuration. However, our goal here is to restore a car to the factory standards. So the correct filter is needed if you wish to get all the points for it. Also, if you're cutting it close on points because you have an owner inspired set of side pipes or obvious BC / CC paint, you may need to chase the rest of the points with your wallet wide open to achieve a top flight. I agree that the price takes my breath away, but there are some very wealthy people out there that may not see four or five hundred dollars the same way I do.

                    Dennis -

On a midyear, the air cleaner element is allocated five originality points; dunno about C3's - you can download the judging sheets.

When presented for Flight judging, the element doesn't have to be THE original element; it will get full credit if it APPEARS to be typical of factory production. If it deviates from that, an appropriate deduction will be made.

The filter has 5 Originality points and 5 Condition points. The price for this filter in real terms is low compared to a Mid Year correct A212CW the last one I witnessed when purchased went for $1200 in 1999 and have heard of recent purchases were in the $4000 to $5000 range now that could be considered crazy.

You have to understand that some owners what to get as close to 100% score as they can. Or he maybe going for a Duntov Award and the only way is for him spend money to have a cushion due to other factors.

Don't let Mark upset you he is a Pilot and we all know how pilots can be.

That sounds like a good plan, Dennis. I don't need an A212CW and I'm not going to take my wife to dinner but, I am going to burn up some chesseburgers on the grill tonight.

Oh yeah, I usually take off one point on the A212CW from Paragon. It is as good as a reproduction gets...for now. I do hear rumblings that a dead ringer is in the works from someone that is very well respected in this hobby. Stay tuned...

Terry, now that we are on the same page - is that 72 version an open or closed air cleaner asy?

Corvette Chevelle and Camaro all had different part numbers for the air cleaner assembly and again they were differentiated by motor & HP

The air cleaner assembly is the part the asy plants installed in these mid mystery years 1968 - 72. Service parts in boxes make good conversation pieces.

For Corvettes the AC 212 CW only fits an open element unit, and the vehicle I referenced with 400 miles is a Bowtie Award winner. I expect it will be in Novi for its Fifth Star, so you can put your finger in the wounds so to speak.

I would very much prefer to keep this discussion on one vehicle line and one type of element. Doing that will avoid a lot of confusion. I am following your lead regarding the topic, and ignoring those who would take the thread off topic. If you want to talk about other model lines or other types of air cleaner elements do so in another thread.

You are quite correct that SERVICE air cleaner elements make for interesting discussion, and for many people that is all they have seen -- so their frame of reference is only that. The same could be said about oil filter elements, but that should be another thread.

The other thing you have to be careful of is that you never know who is reading your posting. I have seen other thread(s) similar to this where it was mentioned that the buyer or seller is a frequent poster on this board!
