FYI and comment. Alright all you experts, please comment on the usage of the heater hose fittings in picture #1 and picture #2. Note that the heater hose fittings in picture #1 have no "nicks", one "nick" and two "nicks". Note that in picture #2 the heater hose fittings have no "nicks" and one "nick".

I'd like to know why the nicks are there in the first place.......

is it ID, or machine tool marks when they clamp it in a lathe or ????

I give up, what's the answer? My old boss used to get mad when he asked me a question and that was my reply.

The originals (I think so, anyway) for my '59 have no nicks.

Urban legend has it they represented different suppliers and of course claims that certain versions were 427 thus trippling the price on those.

I say it this way since the expert has not revealed the data yet at least on this forum.

Bill - you have lots of pumps, what are you finding?

Keeping in mind many have been through more than one rebuild where parts could be mixed up in that process.

The machine marks are intentional, they were not from a holder and the only thing that crosses my mind is that it was for identification, year or what ever.

I saw hydraulic lifters with lines that looked like ring grooves on them and it was to identify the year when we turned them in to the warrantee rep.

Since this is being discussed, Which 'style' should be on a 1969 350/350? The water pump on the car is from an earlier date. I have a correct 3782608 with correct casting date. I am restoring the car and have one of each fitting. Which one should I use in the restoration?
                Thanks,
                Steve

Those of you that want nice heater hose fitting similiar to the one in the pics can go to Car Quest and buy one. "Help" parts. Readily available fitting that is good enough for most unless you are chasing the points.

                            Bill,

Not sure about the one's in your pictures, but these two are original to a 67 SB 300/327:

No nicks. Just after being plated in cadmium.

                              Bill-----

The fittings on the left are GM #3736495. I believe they were used as the waterpump heater hose fitting for all 1963 Corvettes. Thereafter, they were used for all non C-60 and non K-19 applications through 1967. Although GM says otherwise, I believe they were also used for 1968-69 applications without C-60. My original owner 1969 small block without C-60 was originally equipped with this fitting.

The second fittings are GM #3849848. Actually, these are the early version of this fitting which used the symmetrical, rounded hose barb. Later versions used the ramped style hose barb. Just when this change was made to the 3849848 I do not know at the present time. These fittings were supposed to be used for 1964-67 Corvettes with C-60 and/or K-19. However, personally, I believe the 3736495 and 3849848 were used interchangeably by the folks at St. Louis.

I believe the notches on the hex denoted the particular manufacturer of the fittings. Just how they decode, I do not know.
