AC fuel pump date code research data

Enclosed is research data that I have collected for many years studying the stamped date codes on factory installed AC fuel pumps.
    _____________________________________________

    AC re-buildable pumps (w/screws)
    ______________________________________________

    "4657" , "64" casting year w/3 hash marks (Mar. 1964)

    "4657KE" (Nov. 1965), "65" w/10 hash marks (Oct. 1965)

    "4657KE" (Nov. 1965), "65" w/9 hash marks (Sept. 1965)

    "6842KE" (Nov. 1965), "65" w/?? hash marks. NOS pump

    "6942LE" (Nov. 1965), from 1966 Chev. 283 "T1222GA"
    (Dec. 22, 1965)

    "4657EF" (May 1966), "66" w/3 hash marks (Mar. 1966)

    "4657EF" (May 1966), "66" w/4 hash marks (April 1966)

    "4657GF" (July 1966), "66" w/5 hash marks (May 1966),
    NOS pump

    "4657GF" (July 1966), "66" w/6 hash marks (June 1966), NOS pump

    "4657JF" (Oct. 1966), "66" w/10 hash marks (Oct. 1966)

NOTE: I have a few "rebuilt" pumps that have dates that do NOT match because the rebuilders did NOT bother to match up the tops and bottom as these parts were mostly interchangeable.

"AI40503" (Jan. 1969), Service pump for 67 Corvette

"DI40658" (April 1967), Pump from my non-original 1966 Corvette engine. Possibly from an "early" 1967 Camaro as pump # 5656858 was replaced by # 6440524 as per 1967 Camaro AIM (revision record, 2/1/67).

    "FG40433" (June 1967). Original pump on 1967 Corvette 327, VIN # 22049, engine dated June 29, 1967.

"CG40433" (Mar. 1967), Believed to be an original 1967 Corvette 327 pump from a friend on mine in Richmond, VA.

    "LH40709 (Dec. 1968), Seems a bit too early for a 1970 engine stamped "V0702CTK" (July 2, 1970)

    "8K40709" (8th day of 1971), 1071 LT1 eng. "V330CGZ"

    "215K40769" (215th day of 1971), Seems a bit late for a
    1971 eng. "V1201CJK" (Dec. 01, 1970).

    "197J40726" (197th day of 1970), from 1970 Z28 (Nasty Z28 website).

I would appreciate it if anyone that still has the original AC fuel pump from his or her Corvette/Camaro/Chevelle/Nova post the appropriate information on this thread.

I am totally convinced that AC fuel pumps have a STAMPED date code incorporated into the stamped AC part number starting in 1965. I have never found a STAMPED date code on a 1964 or older AC fuel pump except on rebuilt pumps made with random parts.

I hope the non-believers will at least keep an open mind to my stamped date code theory.

Re: AC fuel pump date code research data

Dave, 3 digit year and letter code is essentially confirmed you are spot on. Working on the transition and the two digit codes now...

It does look like both 2-letter and 1letter/1-3 number were used in 1968 calendar year which just might make sense....even though some may not like the date codes on their parts (include me in that bunch) it is what it is.

David--here is another data point for you. Not a factory installed pump, but a NOS 4657 pump with its (presumed) original box. Stamped 4657GF, with a 66 and five hash marks. Hope this helps.

        Jim,

"GF" would be July 1966 with a May 1966 casting date.
I once owned a NOS "4657GF" pump but it had 6 hash marks. There also should be a date code on the box usually on one of the flaps. The box date could be significantly different because it's obviously made by a totally different manufacturer but it should be somewhat in the same time frame. At the time I sold my NOS 4657 pumps in the 1980's I did not record the date code on the box.

Jim's picture of the box flap shows 11-65.

            Ron,

I guess I should have looked at the photo of the AC box.
It's pretty obvious. November 1965 is in the same time frame as far as "over the counter" parts go for Jim's July 1966 fuel pump.

And who was it that said AC fuel pumps were not STAMPED with a date code after 1964?

              Dave,
Good job. I looked in the shop and have one of the AC rebuildable pumps that I couldn't find in any of my books.
Any idea what it is? It is chevy or at least works on one.

All I can find is the 4661 on it.

I have a carter that looks similar but think it is for a chevy marine engine. I don't think any chevy's came with a carter or did they?

                Dom,

My 1963 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 62) lists GM # 5621629 as a fuel pump for 58 PASS. (283)(exc. F.I.) and 58 Ser. 3 (truck) (8 cyl.) as is described as follows: "(stamped 4430 or 4661)". I sold my 1958 parts catalog years ago.

Is there a year casting (like "58") with some hash marks in the hole above the outlet?

                  Dave,
No I looked in the hole and didn't see anything but I will try to clean it and look again.

With your experience on these, what does the 4661 and other #s mean?

Also do the HP pumps differ by fule line size?

I purchased a kit for this pump from LIcorvette and was going to use it on a 63 /300 HP and wonder what the difference was in the 340 HP pump?

                    DOM,

Try using a Q-tip with lacquer thinner or some other solvent.

The "4661" is part of the AC part number. I would ASSUME that the full AC part number is 5594661.
Example: GM part # 5621665 is a AC 4657 pump and is shown in the assembly manuals as 5594657.

Enclosed is a couple of photos of a copy of the instruction sheet from a NOS 4657 fuel pump which shows how is can be converted to fit other applications.

Do fittings for a 3/8" fuel line fit into your "4661" pump?

                      Dave,
Funny you said Q tip, I was in there with one and MEK instead of laquer thinner.
I unscrewed the fitting and the hole is the same size as the one that I cleaned looking for the #s. Found none and maybe this pic will show the inside where I cleaned.

It looks like it would take a larger fitting.

                            DOM,

I do not know when AC started putting the 2-digit year casting w/hash marks on their pumps. I assume your pump was probably made in 1958 or so.

I don't know if your pump will work on your 1963 without reworking the fuel lines. Do the inlet and outlet threaded holes on your pump line up like the 4657 pump (see photo) or can you modify your pump so that they do?

                            Dave

                              Phil,

                              August 1965 ("HE) and August 1965 ("65" w/ 8 hash marks).
Sounds like the the pump was made in August 1965 but I'm sure the non-believers would disagree.

Is there a date code on the AC box?
