Tire ramps

I am thiking about a pair of ramps to enable me to do some minor work, oil changes etc, under both of cars ('72 and an 03)

would like get the cars as safely high as possiible.

What is a reasonable height?

While not exactly "ramps", I have had good success with a Quiklift... It is basically a set of long (and adjustable) ramps which you drive up on, and then use a floor jack to raise the back end up.. Once raised, the car is level and about 18" off the ground which is good to do what you are looking to do plus other repairs.

I use the Quiklift with my '63 and '65 all the time, but have not tried it yet with the '10

Jerome...Are you the last sucker in the world to buy some of those ramps? I've had two pair...the last pair (a gift) I sold as scrap in a recycle load.

They're a giant PITA...Heavy and hard to position; stored they seem to occupy twice as much floor space and are always underfoot; when you contact the ramps with your wheels they are likely to slide forward; if you have a late model Corvette, the front air dam is going to interfere with the ramps.

I'm better off without them taking up space in my garage...but that's just my opinion.

Jerome, The 72 will be no problem with ramps, But the 03 is another story, they are very low to the ground and would require a lower profile ramp, to me as chuck says they can be a pain, and for safety reasons would require another set of eyes to tell you when to stop.

Jerome: I have used ramps for over 40 years to work on my Corvette. It is scary driving up on them but get a friend to spot for you when you do it. The sliding forward is easily cured by having a hole at the bottom of the incline and attaching a piece of rope extending toward the car so that when the weight of the car is on the rope, the ramps can't go anywhere. They also make the world's safest jackstands if you have two floor jacks and can lift both sides simultaneously until you are high enough to get them under the tires.

I don't have a lift so the ramps are the next best thing for me. I usually lift the car with a floor jack then slide the ramps under the tires, very nice room to work on the underside of the motor and frame.

If I am tired and it's warm enough I will even close my eyes for a while and nap while I'm there..

Rhino ramps. Made of heavy duty plastic and they won't slide.

Race Ramps are the answer (www.raceramps.com). I have the 67" set. These raise the car 10" which provides adequate clearance for most jobs. They are 2 piece, so you can remove the ramp portion after the car is up on the ramp to provide better access under the car. They have ant-skid provisions to prevent them from "creeping forward" as you drive up on them.

They are extremely light so handling them is no problem, at all. The incline is gradual enough so that with these ramps any C1, C2, C3 or C4 Corvette can be driven up the ramp without interference with the front air dam or other parts of the car. I don't know about C5 or C6.

There are only two downsides that I can see to these ramps. First, they are rather expensive. Second, they do require quite a lot of room to store. However, they are light enough to be hung on a wall.

You may have to do some looking but these are available in Australia and the UK.



They go down to nothing so low cars are fine and up nice and high.

For a C5 I think the extensions would be needed. I am going to call them tomorrow, but would like as much info tonight.

I have the one piece Raceramps. They work fine for my C3 and C6. They are light weight and don't take up much room if you store them standing up.

$352.00? Sure sounds like a lot for light-weight ramps. I like the design of the two piece unit as that is right where you will be spending a lot of time in that area (oil changes, etc) but I guess I'm too cheap and will have to stick with the floor jack and jack stands.

Yeah, I like those too.

If you're not using your garage as a resto shop, and just parking your cars, you can probably anchor them down to the floor and just leave them...no worry about moving them, stowing them or tripping over them. And, no worry about low approach angles.

It looks like the hydraulic cylinder pushes the ramp assembly rearward over center to lock, so you would have to plan for that rearward travel of the car when lifting.

I can't find a NA source anywhere either...just Craig's Aussie and UK links. I'm thinking it's the same company with an Australian outlet. Pretty smart of the Brits to come up with this...they must still have some greasy-handed tractor engineers over there.
