    C1 inspection marks

Working on this 60 is like an archaeological dig, unearthing tons of grease to find many inspection marks still intact.

    Fun stuff..............

    Front spring

    Tie Rod

    Inner Tie Rod

    Outer Tie Rod

    Top of spring

    Spindles

    Clutch return spring

    Protective covering.......

My '56 also seems to have all of it's original marks intact and 24K original miles and thanks for the CA desert climate.

I'm planning on cleaning everything on the car and trying to take pictures.

May I asked exactly what you used to degrease but leave the paint marking intact?

What degreasing product did you use? Did you use any type of brush after loosening up the layers of grease/

On the '59 project I'm on.......yes many marks like you have seen on the '60. When the body came off and I washed the frame there was a white chalk mark, "199" if I recall, written on the top of the center of the "X" crossmember. Unsure what it meant. Can't find the photo.

The yellow marks on the rear axle and springs were very pronounced. Some pics of that and many others in this very informative thread a while back....

I used Mineral Spirits and a couple of different nylon bristle brushes. The mineral spirits did attack the tar based black paint, but left the inspection marks intact. I also used plenty of paper towel rags to wipe the parts down. Just remember to dispose of the solvent soaked rags in a safe manner. I put mine outside of the garage in the metal trash can.

Interesting though, the yellow used on the tie rods must be a different paint from the yellow on the spindle and clutch spring. I say this because the yellow on both the spindle and clutch sping seems to be lifted into the grease and was difficult to keep intact. The yellow on the tie rods was not affected by the grease and stayed on the metal.

              Joe,

I used a gasket scraper along with some other tools to remove the bulk of the grease. Then mineral spirits and a nylon brush to get the last of it off.

                  Re: C1 inspection marks

On my early 57 I used lacquer thinner to clean the suspension parts and differential. It cleaned off all the grease and oil but left the inspection marks in great condition.
To preserve the marks I just sprayed the parts with a matt finish clear.
