    Re: Zinc in Rotella T

Call me a "Doubting Thomas" but every time this topic comes up I spend a little time searching for some specific info to the oil in question, in this case Rotella T4. In the past I've had no luck in finding a report on oil additive content or a document outlining exactly what the API CK-4 spec means in terms of additive content that is required to be in an oil; EX: Zinc.

I did find this from The Petroleum Institute of America. Their analysis does indicate zinc content along with quite a bit of other data. Is this considered a reliable source? If it is then I think a lot of the discussion about zinc levels may be put to rest.

    Hoe this helps the topic.

Tom, Thanks for that link. I certainly would consider the Petroleum Institute of America a reliable source. Looks like this Rotella T4 still has the requisite amount of phosphorous and Zinc for our old flat tappet motors. I just bought 3 gallons of it yesterday at Wally World.

I'm not familiar with the Petroleum Qualify Institute of America (PQIA), but they appear to be a legitimate organization. The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the organization that promulgates test suites and licenses their certification label and categories when a submitted product passes all the required tests. Every major oil company and vehicle/engine manufacturer are members, and their lubrication engineers make up the various API committees that develop all the tests.

PQIA appears to be an independent "test only" organization, and their membership includes some of the major oil companies, plus various refiners and blenders.
