    Re: 63 Transmission linkage

    Thanks Joe,

This would appear to be a fairly simple matter: Even in 1963, it cost money to add phosphate coating to a part. As such, I'm pretty sure that the original suppliers would not have phosphated the rods and levers unless the prints called for it. Since the prints don't mention phosphate, you can bet the farm that it wasn't there.

Since there is clearly no phosphate on my parts, I don't think I'll add it. I'll just clean off the slight surface rust and leave em as they are.
    Mike

      Michael,
Im with Duke here on the cad plating. If you clean them now you will have to do so again shortly.
My 67 linkage was grey with rusted rods, the gray cleaned up with carb cleaner and was not rusted at all. The rods that were attached and arms were rusted.

      on my way to shop

Dom, you're correct that it'll rust quickly outdoors, but this car is a trailer queen, so it'll be fine for a while.

If I was concerned about corrosion, I'd put phos, black electrodeposited paint, and oil on those parts (GM6047M) so they'd never rust, while meeting the look the JG is looking for. I'll probably do that with my black car, cause I drive it.

        Thanks,
        Mike

          Michael,
I took some pictuers today after my post about the cad on my parts.
I respect what you are doing and one pic is my 67 linkage that I cad plated, but the actual shifter was not touched , only cleaned with carb cleaner. It has that gray that was talked about.

The other is my 63 after I used the black on it, it had traces of black before I did it.

The other pic is of the rods, and under bright light it does look like there was black under the rust. I don't think the pic will show what I see up close but I did schotch brite some rust off and found black under it.

Again it's what looks like the black oxcide, but I couldn't say it for certain. what I would say is that the black is not greese because it would not come off with MEK.

Oh well the pictures turned out brown and the rods not to clear, even the white towel looks brown.
