    1972 gas tank

Is there any tell-tail signs that would identify an original gas tank from a non-original? The tank in question is still in the car.

Visually, I don't think I could tell you. Any evidence of a tank sticker on it ???? That would sure confirm an original.

Is there an easy way to check for the tank sticker with the tank still in the car?

I was able to bend down the rubber neak around the fill on the tank and look from above. I also was able to reach up from under the tank onto the top and touch it. Be careful touching it, it is very fragile. Mine is also a '72 and it was glued to the passenger side of the tank next to the filler neck. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

I believe the replacement tanks have the corners of the excess metal where the two halves are joined different than the original, but wait for someone who has actual experience with the replacement tanks to speak up.

FWIW: My 1970 had no tank sticker on it when I dropped the tank in 1972. I could see where it had been, but it was gone. I wish I knew where it went.

I'm not an expert by any means but my '72 tank is origional, I took the sticker off myself. I'll be removing the tank sometime this week as part of a rear suspension resto. If you like I'll take pictures of it for you to compare if you like.

Most likely I'll be replacing the tank with a new one this winter. When the new one comes I can also give you pictures of that unless they are easily availible somewhere else. Have fun!!

Lynn, that would be great. I look forward to seeing your pics. The more the better.

                Lynn,

Are you buying the Quanta version or another one?
AFAIK there are 2 gas tank suppliers so the configuration may differ.

My initial thought was a Quanta tank. I wasn't sure there were other good reproductions, are there? And do most of the major suppliers sell Quanta's tanks or should I buy direct?

Jerome, The OL Anderson logo is the only other way I know, And of the age of tank is sometimes visible from the look of the plating.

The logo is visible sometimes if you drop the spare tire down it generally in the area of the fuel sender.

Most of the larger catalog places (including at least one of the 2 here in MI) sell a different tank. Only Quanta and its authorized resellers sell the tank with the original logo in place.

The price difference is nominal, and Quanta is a nice company. I bought direct for both of mine.

How much do the reproduction tanks cost?

Mike, I had the same problem with my 72 and ended up finding it chewed up into little pieces by mice in the pass. side frame rail, I was able to piece about 3/4 of back together, what a find. Any way there are sometimes other reasons why there may not be a tank sticker where its suppose to be.
