L-48 head gasket sealer for steel gasket

Should there be some sort of sealer for the GM steel head gaskets for this engine.
It is currently being rebuilt completely.

Use aluminum paint or Copper Coat. Many replacement steel shim gaskets are pre-coated with aluminum paint. If so, you don't need to use anything.

What Joe said, but the Fel Pro .015" steel shim gasket has a polymer coating, and I don't think it needs any kind of added sealer. If you use this gasket, follow the Fel Pro installation instructions, which should be on the packaging.

I have used copper coat ever since it came out and totally agree with Joe & Duke. I just want to add that if the head & block surface is not perfect you may need it with that gasket.
I usually spray 2 coates on each side of the shim gaskit and after you torque it you will see tiny droplets that squeezed out that wipe off with laquer thinner or another strong solvent.
