I recieved my 63 340/4 spd vert. today and am accessing the correct part no., and there stampings. The starter does not seem to have a part no. facing the normal direction on the housing, do they stamp no.s on the starters somewhere else or is it possiable there was no stamp?

Ed,
Starter would be stamped and should be plainly seen....ending with #'s (I believe) 242 if an original starter. No big deal, found found mine at a swap meet. Start you a list Ed....- Top

Edward --- IIRC, some V8 Pontiacs with a driver-side mounted starter have the Delco stampings on the case clocked differently. I know that there's Pontiac starters with numbers close to the 1117352, (correct for a '65 L78 396 engine), but with the last digit off either way -- I forget exactly. These numbers can't be seen when installed on a car with passenger-side starter.Last edited by Wayne M.; November 13, 2010, 06:10 PM.- Top

Re: 63 Starter pt. no.and Date Stamping
As others have mentioned, the practice of physically where a given starter motor case was stamped varied with starter PN and target vehicle. Once a given original starter has gone through the aftermarket remanufacturing cycle, all bets are off as to what/how a given case might be stamped.
Since starters were a high wear item, it's not unusual for the factory original to a given car to have been replaced in the prior ownership chain. Ditto for the starter's solenoid...- Top
