    '68 Headlamps

A retaining cup (part that holds the bulb) - what is the finish on this part? Mine look like they were plated but all after-market appear to be black. Which is correct?

Brian, I would gander to say you are correct they were plated black oxide maybe? Like everything in the reproductions anything goes I would bet that during judging the black paint would fly though, since the deduction would be less that one tenth of a point.

It has been a while since I have seen those parts on my 1970, but I remember them as gloss black. That means little to you and your 1968, however.

        Brian------

The GM nomenclature for the part is RING. There were 4 different rings, each specific to one of the 4 headlight positions.

The rings were finished in one of 2 ways:

        1) semi-gloss black painted

        2) stamped from pre-punch galvanized material.

GM was using these by the millions per year and I expect that even if any were manufactured internally by GM, outside suppliers also manufactured them. I expect that the specs for the rings provided alternate finishes and that's why some are painted and some galvanized.

          HI Brian
The bulb headlight cup for a 68 is a galvanized gold irate finish, My final assembly date is June 8th on my car.
I have other original headlight assemblies from early 68 cars and they are also a galvanized and gold irate finish.
          Black for 69 and up.
          Thanks, Grant
