    I had a 396 with chrome valve covers. Had a chrome air cleaner lid and bottom too. It was an early production car and GM used it for some photo work around the time the 396's came out, before it was sold to the first owner.
    I doubt the engine had the chrome parts when the car left the end of the assembly line but the paperwork showing the options also included "8 cyl conditioning", which may have been the point where the painted parts were switched for chrome. (8 cyl conditioning has been discussed here previously)

    The car went to GM in Michigan so it's possible that the chrome parts were added there.

    Same car that I sold to Burroughs thirty five years ago and was used for the book.. Corvette Restoration, State of the Art.
