Need help to de-code 63 vin & trim I have.

Can you guys de-code my 63 coupe #s?
I have not taken it off the frame yet but am rebuilding the mechanical components when I do the same part for my 67.

It is red on red and I think it was a 300/327 4 speed with a 3:36 posi.

Yep. She's a red on red coupe. The 16075th Corvette built in 63. Nothing on trim tag or VIN will give powertrain info.

        Dom;

Is the original rear in the car? If so, check the date and code... For 3.36 CA would indicate 3.36 non-posi while CB would be the same 3.36 with posi.

If the original cluster is in there, check the tach redline... 5500 for 250/300 HP cars 6500 for 340/360HP cars.

Thanks Tom & Jack, that was fast.
The guy that sold it to me in the early 70's wanted $150.00 less engine, trans, radiator, tires/rims, and radio.
The front is damaged along with the left fender and frame. He also removed every fuse, Light bulb, and had it completely apart when I came to pick it up.
He used the engine, trans, and radiator in a jeep.
I was raising 4 kids at the time and didn't have the money to offer if he sold it complete. But tlooking for baby chicks to let the kids raise brought me to that farmers back yard.

          Thanks

Sounds like you better go back to the farmers yard and look for the Jeep !!!

You should also have a code on the trim tag just above the Style 63 837.
This will be the body build code date. It's a letter and a number.
Regards and good luck on your project

                  Joel,
I'm on my way to the shop right now and am sure it was the original because the car wasn't that old. I also read the bolts for activity and they looked virgin. The tach is a good Idea too.

Tom that got a laugh out of me, I tried to remember where I got it for years so I could pick up the rest of the paperwork and check for more parts.
I do have the guys name that owned it and am trying to locate him as he was the farmers nephew.

Well off to the shop to check the tach and 3:36

Thanks guys for all the help today

                      Joel,
The #s were......... CB 5 9 63........ and the tach redlined at 5500.

                      Page,
I found a raised ......15..... above the style 63 837 with no letter.

Dom what looks like the number "15" is really the letter "I" (for May), and the "5" is the 5th week of May (31 days in the month). I believe the digit representing the week rather than the day of the month was unique to the 1963 model year.

                          DOM

                          Dom;

I agree with Wayne, that is an "I" not a "1" and yes for '63 that digit is the week of the month... in your case 5th week which means it is a very late May car.

OK, so the rear was assembled on May 9th which is a good indication that it is original and the CB means 3.36 with Posi I would check this when you can. The input shaft should turn 3.36 (like 3 and 1/3) times for one rotation of the rear wheel and your wheels should turn in the same direction if you turn one with both off the ground

The 5500 redline means that the original engine was either 250 or 300 HP, hydraulic lifter version... The guys may correct me but I would suspect you car had a wide ratio Muncie in it... given how late it was built along with an AM/FM radio....

                          Have fun!

                          Joel

                            Wayne,
                            That makes sence.
I could only get in the drivers side and lay where the seats.
I wondered if it was the letter but it didn't have a space between it and the 5.
I guess the I needs a better EYE.
By the way , I noticed that the trim tag didn't have rivits. It looked as if it were spot welded. IS that normal?

I Checked the ratio and turned it to see if it was a 3:36 posi and it was. Also it had a blank tag the size of a silver dollar on one of the bolts.
