    AC outlet temp

Just installed new POA valve "update"-actually a compressor cycler, expansion valve, and dryer, and recharged with real R12 on my '67 factory L79. Before work I was only getting 60 degrees from outlet. Now I'm getting 46 degrees, maybe 44, depending on whose thermometer you use, on recirculate high fan mode.80 degrees low humidity outside air.Heater valve is working. Shop manual says should be 40 or 42 degrees, but should I be satisfied and worry about something else?
    Thanks

Are you checking it in a parked position or while driving? Original condensor or replacement? Both of these will have an effect on the temp. I'd probably leave it alone if you are getting temp in the 40's at the outlet.

      Re: AC outlet temp

Come on guys, I need some help on this AC thing. I'd really appreciate those with mid year, especially '67 AC cars letting me know what kind of AC outlet temps they get on max setting and with what kind of outside air temps. Please see my initial post about my particular system. You can also e-mail additional info if you like.
      Thanks

            Re: AC outlet temp

AC duct temperatures as a function of outside air temp are listed on page 1A-33 of the 1967 Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual.

They range from a low of 38-40 F for an outside air temp of 70 F, to a high of 45-47 F for an outside air temp of 120 F.

AC duct temperatures are also shown for all outside air temperatures in between these two limits. This should provide the information you seek.

I'm getting 39 degrees from the center duct with an original unrestored system with outside temps in the 80's. 67 327/300

Thanks for the replies so far-anybody else checked theirs?. Larry, I know what the book says you should get but what I want to know is what temps people are actually getting as compared to my 46 degrees and any suggestions to how to bring it down.

                      Hello William;
For what it is worth, while attending A/C class at the General Motors Training center in Milwaukee, as a young mechanic in the early '60s, we were taught the ambient interior temp. (not outlet) should be NO MORE than 25-30 degrees below outside temperature. The concern was people would pass out from the rapid temp. change when exiting their vehicle(s).

Also air flow through the condenser and radiator are crucial in determining the final outlet temp.

                      Regards.
                      Ray

Here's how it was done at a Chevy dealer in 1963 where I worked in the A/C dept in the summer in Ft.Worth, TX:
With system warmed up, set fast idle at 2000 rpm.
Place 3' shop fan in front of radiator.
Place A/C thermometer in PASS outlet.
After 10 min tops air should be at 38 degrees, if not adjust as needed.

Also we installed extra insulation wrap as needed and always made sure the drain tube was intact.
Never had a complaint or comeback. Remember, this is a refrigeration system, not an air conditioner!

Where did you put the extra insulation wrap?

William, my 67 coupe A/C is all original (no replacement parts). I have added a can of R-12, 3 or 4 times since 1970 when I bought it. (the system has never been opened since then). My temp. at the center outlet is 44 to 46 degrees when driving. ( I keep a A/C termometer in the vent all the time) . Dale

On the cold pipe going into the evaporator & back from the expansion valve. Check the rubber drip valve on the box, as it rots and you lose a lot of cold air.
