    Choke pulloff

What effect does a cracked or chipped choke pulloff have on the carburetor?

    Thanks,

It depends whether the crack or chip renders the unit non-functional. If it doesn't render the unit non-functional, the crack or chip only represents an "aesthetic" problem. If it does render the unit non-functional, then the choke pull-off will not release the choke properly.

The choke pull-off can be easily checked for basic functionality simply by applying a vacuum to the vacuum port. If the pull-off lever moves, then the chances are the unit is ok; if not, it's not working properly.

If the problem is only a crack or a chip, you may be able to repair it with epoxy. Then, retest.

It could also cause a vacuum leak. Check that it holds vacuum.

Thanks. When cleaning the engine I noticed that the pulloff had been chipped on the edge and appeared to expose a small part of the diaphragm. It seems to hold vacuum. I have a replacement. By the way....on a '66 what does an original pulloff look like? Color? Markings?

My recollection is that it was a tan colored plastic, but I'm not 100% sure. I think you'll find that replacements may be yellow or black.

By the way, I'll be interested to see what you get as a replacement for this piece. While I THINK the original for your application was a plastic-bodied piece as described, most Holley carbs used a metal-bodied vacuum choke unloader. I think that most of the replacements are metal-bodied.

Joe, I bought two a few years ago for my 0204 Q-Jet. They are an off-white plastic and I see that they are still available in that color, I guess as reproductions. They call 'em NOS on eBay. New Overseas Stock? I'd prefer a new original in the correct color.

The Q-Jet choke pull-offs were mainly plastic bodied. Some of the later ones may have been metal, but all those through at least 1972 were plastic.
