    Re: Early 1968 Headlight Actuators

Dale my friend in Chicago still has his last week of production 68 he ordered new. Both inside door handles have no ribs. I would surmise that there could be a mix at the end of production of ribbed and no rib handles. The hard part is finding unmolested late 68's my friends has a no rib drivers replacement handle. But still has the original now 2 piece version that was originally installed in his car.

      Hi Paul,

I found the actuators in my storage area that I took off the '68 about 3 years ago. At Chapter meets, I was always told that the actuator on the passenger side was incorrect because both actuators tubes were suppose to be turned out. I have posted a picture. Please excuse the finish on both of them. It was an experiment gone bad. What do you think about originality? Thanks as always for setting me straight.

        Paul:

My February 68 has actuators with nipples pointing in opposite directions (to the outboard sides of the car).

Terry thanks that is the config I have been seeing. Now we just need to figure out about when they changed the config. Terry the finish looks great it those red dots that bother me!!!! Just kidding.

Just a thought the change may have occurred when the hoses were changed from the thin wall to the thick wall design. The thicker hose may have interfered with the hood causing the change in the tubes position and direction. We know that early cars had a thin wall vacuum hoses that had sealing problems which caused vacuum leaks in the system.

Now I wonder if some cars were returned to the dealers early on for a service problem with the vacuum system. Dealers were told that the repair was replace the hoses with the updated hose and thus new style actuators were also installed. I am just thinking out load I do not know this for a fact.

If anyone could add to this it would be greatly appreciated.

Joseph I do seem to remember the car but after a while it is hard to remember them all individually. This is what we are trying to do is to find out when they went to this configuration. We now have a few cars that have there tubes pointing left and right in Feb. 68. So maybe the change occurred mid production. Thanks Joseph
