    Underhood blackout paint

I am trying to find the correct paint for under the hood of my '67. I've read the previous threads and thought I had it narrowed down to Krylon Industrial Semiflat 1613, using their black primer 1316 underneath. However, when I called Krylon to see if they were compatable (they were), they recommended NOT using them under the hood due to high heat (not recommended more than 120 degrees). It may bubble or peel. Instead, they recommended Duplicolor primer gray engine enamel DE1612 and their low gloss black engine enamel DE 1634. The problem is that the low gloss is more of a satin, and may be too shiny.
    So, my questions are:
    1. Has anyone had any problems with using the Krylon under the hood?
    2. Does anyone know how correct the Duplicolor low gloss black color is?
Thank you all very much for your help!

I've used both Krylon 1613 and John Deere Blitz Black for this application with no adverse effects.

I was going to use rustolium because it is excellent with heat and they have flat and simigloss.
It will take the heat but is it right? Also it is excellent for factory required runs.

As Stephen already mentioned, I have also used 1613 under the hood and never had a problem. However, I've always thought that 1613 was a bit too flat. So I'm interested in hearing about this Duplicolor option which may very well be too far the other direction (gloss), or other feedback on this subject. I know it's come up before on several occasions, so the archives might have some of this information.

I've used the Underhood paint from Eastwood with excellent results.

            Hi Ken and Jack,
I've liked the 1613 quite well.
I find it's quite easy to do a touch-up if needed and the degree of gloss can be varied a bit by how many coats of paint you apply and also by how 'wet' you spray the top coat.
            Regards,

              Ken,
I'm with Stephen on this, I have used both JD Blitz black and Krylon 1613 both the old and the Industrial and never had a problem with either.

When I used blackout on my 63, I bought some lacquer paint and flattened to satin. Very easy to do and I think that's the factory procedure. I don't think GM was concerned with a high heat paint.

                  Re: Underhood blackout paint

                  Dear Kenny,

Thank you for contacting Krylon. We appreciate your inquiry.

As long as you use the 1316 primer and not the 51316 primer you shouldn't have a problem with incompatibility. The 51316 is more of a typical enamel primer than the 1316 which is modified to be topcoated with lacquer. Are the cans a couple of years old, or did you purchase through an Industrial store? The acrylic lacquer and modified enamel formulas are only sold through Industrial supply stores now, so this is why I ask. Keep in mind, the lacquer will only hold up to about 120 degrees F. Make sure the surface won't reach temperatures higher than this since the paint could burn or crack.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have further questions.

                  Regards,

                  Kim

GM as any OEM, has a spec for everything that goes into a car, and its on a drawing somewhere so there is zero need for speculation.
