I think that the differences seen between your 1963 and 1964 caps represents the classic sort of differences I would expect from tooling wear. Curiously, that's exactly what one would otherwise expect from 1963 to 1964.

Hi Bill, I agree you should have nice black cap along with the oil filler tube of course.
I love those early 63 FI's. No chrome except for the flag. See you soon. JD

I have put a nice dimple in a ton of those old caps. But recently I got in trouble and ruined an original cap with very good chrome on it. I taped the area of the dimple real nice. Found the center. Took nice punch with masking tape on the end. Put the cap on a piece of oak and gave it a smack. Then the chrome peeled off. You'll have that. Now the chrome shop will buff off the dimple.

63 327/340 hp - Did the original oil cap 3828373, have a cork disk type gasket or a rubber ring gasket. My cap had a rubber ring type gasket that needs replacing. I realize that cap itself might not be original or correct but is a separate issue TBD.

Originals had a cork gasket. However, some were a disc type (that covered the entire underside of the cap) and some had a round hole in the center. I do not know when the change occurred.

My mid-March production SWC originally had an annular cork gasket. In the mid seventies I bought a pack of replacements (none for sale) from my local Chevrolet dealer.
