At a local cruise night a gent who appeared to have had one too many stopped by my '61, looked at the engine, and asked "is it hard to get parts for these English cars?"

I have the year appropriate license plates on both of my cars; a 1964 VA plate for my 64 and a 1966 VA plate for my 66. In VA you can register an old plate if the number sequence is not taken. I wish I had a nickel for every time someone who is looking right at my plates asks me "what year is it?".

        Re: Comments about YOUR car!!!

Several years ago, I took the 62 roman red with red interior, 63 Saddle/Saddle, and the 65 ralley red with white interior to the Good Guys Nationals in Puyallup, WA. I drove the 62, wife drove the 63 and her childhood girl friend likes to drive the 65. I'm sitting behind the 63 and this nice looking lady comes up to me and asks me if I own this beautiful gold Corvette. I said yes I do and she continues to walk around the car and taking in its beauty. After a couple of minutes, she turns to me and said "Finally, a man that is secure enough to NOT have to have a red Corvette". I just smiled and said, "Thanks, You Bet."

I had a couple of guys come up to my split window at a local cruise in. When they went around the back, I heard one say to the other "this is one of those rare split bumper cars!".

I had four guys come up to me at restaurant one time. I was in my 66 427 / 425 car. They asked various reasonable questions until one guy asked what sort of gas mileage I got. I laughed. The other three guys laughed too. One of them then said, "I would suppose that gas mileage is not a big player here."

Don't forget the people who owned a 67 with the Targa Top.

At a vintage Corvette display at the Dallas (new car) Auto Show, I had a couple of "brothers" come up to my car to check it out. I watched them while they paid particular interest to the reproduction window sticker. I was shocked that they thought my car was for sale! I tried to explain to them that the car was NOT for sale, but I don't think they ever caught on that the window sticker was the 1965 price. -Clark

                      Re: Comments about YOUR car!!!

Well...........I haven't posted for awhile; still waiting for my "new" '66 coupe to be delivered from the west coast...to the midwest. It is four weeks ago today and the shipper is thinking "maybe this weekend". But.........if I can add a slight twist to this thread.....otherwise just ignore this. It would involve someone's '64 small block talking to me rather than the owner or another bystander (expert). My wife and I were at an all Corvette show the other day (the cars were headed west to the annual Rapid City show which, I believe, another Corvette club puts on every year). Anyway, this involves (mostly) the Winters Foundry "snowflake" we are all familiar with. Winters' is (or was?) a non-ferrous foundry which, as we all know, did a lot of aluminum castings for Chevrolet. But, did Winters do any ferrous (iron) work for Chevrolet? I'd never heard that to be the case, but this engine had an intake with a Winters' snowflake cast in the usual place (alongside the number 1 cylinder). The only odd thing is that this intake was painted Chev orange....."sacrilege to paint raw aluminum" has been my belief for 40 years and more. Looking at the tach, it was a low horsepower engine, but to try and make a pretty aluminum intake look like an iron standard piece? UNLESS I'm wrong about Winters doing only non-ferrous work. Hell, he could sell the Winter's intake for $600 (or more) and buy the right iron unit for a 1/4 of that. And if I can add one more oddity, I've seen any number of small block mid-year Corvettes offered for sale which are stated to be "matching numbers" or "327 engine", but the rear of the engine is missing (entirely) the fresh air half of the pcv connection.....(which through 1967 was through a large hole in the block adjacent to the distributor). But these engines still have the pcv valve attached to the oil fill tube! Humm? But.......the car noted above had the existing large hole in the back of the block PLUGGED and, again, a pcv valve in its proper place??? And NO holes in the valve covers. To me that is kinda weird--for what he could have sold the Winter's intake for he could have bought an iron intake and an air cleaner (if he didn't possess one with the proper place for the hose) to get the correct fresh air connection and had enough money left over for a set of tires (almost) or whatever. To each his own, but that certainly did surprise me. But then a lot of guys could care less about NCRS, so "who am I to judge, your honor". Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I looks like an interesting post, but I can't read a solid screen of single spaced text with no paragraph breaks.

This thread is a riot! I thought I had heard them all, but noooooooo...

...think guys made strange remarks/ask strange about vintage Corvettes? You ought to hear what they say/ask about Cosworth Vegas. But that's off topic.

We recently hired a new VP (far east descent) and he came into my office along with the sales guy. I was busy with another employee so they kept themselves busy with idle chit chat.

I have a few pictures of my C3 and C6 on the wall and I saw him point to them and ask the sales guy "is that his Z?" The sales guy, who owns a pretty neat Datsun 240Z politely corrected him and said "no they are Corvettes" The VP replies "ohhhh Corvettes". He had no clue.

I don't think I've ever, ever gone for a drive in my SWC without at least one person asking me what year it is. Always followed by 'nice car' or a thumbs up.
About 5-6 years ago, I was approached by a couple who seemed to me to be in their late 50's or so. They asked questions and gave many compliments until the gentleman asked me if it was a new 2005 model. What??????? HA.

I also remember late one night a girl passing me on the sidewalk and hearing her tell her friend that she 'just has to see this'.
I turned the corner after them and she said to her friend and a couple of others who were sitting on the curb behind my '63, 'see, I told you...it's a spaceship!!' They all sat there staring for 1/2 hr.

I have a friend who used to go to car shows and swap meets with his 64 Coupe. He would put a for sale sign on it. When a potential buyer would ask how much he wanted for the car, he would say that he had just taken a deposit. Then they would ask how much he sold it for. He would tell them some rediculously low price. They would get all excited and say that they would have given him twice as much and in some cases insist that he give the supposed buyer his deposit back and that they would give him much more.
He evetually did really put it up for sale and sold it for a fair price. He once took it to an All Ford show and parked it just outside of the entrance. The Vette got far more attention than any of the Fords did.
