    Finish on Exhaust Manifold Bolts

Guys, at this point my 265 engine and 3 speed transmission are now in the chassis of my '56. I am ready to install the exhaust system and am starting with the exhaust manifolds. I purchased new manifolds as well as new bolts. The bolts I received appear to have the correct marking on the heads. They have a black shiny finish on them. Is this correct? There is nothing in the '56 & '57 JM that I can find covering this. Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)

I don't remember them being black but over time they get rusty looking .

The bolts were originally black phosphate-finished. I would not call this finish "shiny". I would call it a "chalk-board" appearing finish that varied from a medium gray to a very dark gray. A shiny black finish is usually black oxide.

Roy and Joe, thanks for your replies to my post. After washing the bolts with solvent, they seem to have the finish that Joe describes. I will use them with the finish as purchased. Now I can get one step closer to getting the engine running. Thanks!! Brooks Glover (2141)
