Off Topic: 1958 Impala 2-dr hardtop in my area

I hope this isn't an improper thread. I tried to clear it with a mod but no one's light is on. If it's improper, I apologize.

On the way home today, I noticed the 1958 Chevrolet Impala 2-door hardtop sitting in a carport had a for sale sign on it. No one was at home, but I stopped to look at it. It's Cay Coral, Artic White top, Cay Coral interior. The car has been there for several years. It appears to have totally original paint, interior, chrome. There is no rust on the car anywhere that I could find. Even has wide whites on it.

It's a 283, automatic, has custom wheel covers (the old white waffle kind with spinners), but there is an oil leak judging from the cardboard under the engine, has the wrong air cleaner and perhaps carb. I called the owner later who told me he bought it from the daughter of the original owner 4 years ago. The car spent it's life in California. The owner says it runs good and that the only damage was to a quarter panel when a neighbor once back into it in CA that was straightend and repainted. He wants $25K, which I don't know whether is outrageous or fair.

It does need new paint and interior, although the paint is very presentable. The body is very straight. I am not affiliated with this sale. I'll give the tel. # to anyone who's interested. The pic below is not the actual car but it looks a lot like it (paint combo is a little different).

Wow! If I was in the market for, what looks like, a mostly original, 2 owner '58 Impala, this is the one to start on. I bought a '64 Dodge Polara 500 (identical to the tee of the first car I had in high school and college) a few years ago from the original owner's son. Put new paint and headliner in her and what fun it is.

I forgot to add that it still has the old clear plastic seat covers on the rear seat. The front seat has tears, but the rear seat is only faded. Carpet is faded but not worn. There is absolutely no rust or pitting in the bumpers. I couldn't even find any nicks in the sides from other car doors.

          For what it's worth.........

A fellow I know here in Florida is trying to sell his 58 Impala 2 door HT.

It's a highly detailed car. NOT sure if it's a frame off, but the car is stunning. 348 CI. Has the tripower with it, but now running a 4 barrel.

Automatic. Vintage Air.... Blue/blue...Chrome and stainess are outstanding. Interior is pristine.

He's been asking 35K for it, and can't get a bite.

SO..............I toss this into the discussion for ???? I do not follow the prices for those cars.

The buyer has to love the car. Any money that is put into the car may not be recovered.

This car you show looks like Buddy Holly's '58 Impala below. I believe it was Coral and was allegedly auctioned off at BJ last January. PT

Sweet! The wife would kill me if I put another project in the driveway.

Your picture looks like the car I'm talking about; it has the same color combination (white top, coral body). The picture I posted was as close as I could find. I'm glad to hear that the owner's asking price may not be too much out of line. This is the kind of car one hopes to find no matter what the model.

A photography question. Take a look at the rocker panels on the white over coral '58 and notice what looks like stripes on a zebra, also sort of noticeable on the grill. What causes this?

I took photos of my '68 the other day and the rockers and grill came out the same way, only with a slightly more distinct color variation. I shot from differnent angles, different lighting but had the same result. Digital related?

                    Beats me.

                    Best regards,

                      Best regards,
I get the same thing on my digital photos Charlie. I can't explain it either but I bet it has something to do with all the pixels in the photo.

I'm sorry, but anyone who views this car as a valid starting point at 22K for a resto that will yield its cost at an auction is seriously bonkers. No mention of A/C, etc., that helps. This is a rathole that you'd better love because you're going to own it for a long time. A better project might be Aunt Sue's 210 4-dr sedan, because at least the starting point is $800. Get real.
