Hello everyone. One of the lucky ones with the door and emblem rivited on. Everything is in great shape but the door finaly came off. I was carefull every time opening it.I heard there is a tool you can carefully spread the rivets. Is there such a thing? Thank You, Jeff

Re: 68 Rivited Gas Door
Joe had done an excellent job on the rivet "restoration" for 67 gas door lids. I have been working (but not too hard) on the same idea for 68 gas door lids.
I gave Joe one of my 68 gas door lids (I own 32 of them, including two NOS doors), and he is / going to see if he can replicate his 67 rivet effort on a 68 gas door.
I even have a drawing (hand drawn) of the spin rivet tool that the factory used to expand the rivets.
I recommend to many 68 owners that if their 68 gas door assembly is intact and in good shape, to remove it and replace it with a 69 or later gas door assembly. Reinstall it only for judged events.
What has happened to you is a common occurrence with 68 gas doors. I was looking at a 68 for sale many years ago, and I asked the seller if the gas door still had the original rivets. He told me to open it up and check for myself. I suggested that he open the gas door instead. Sure enough, he did, and the gas door came off of the hinge. I don't even want to think about the conversation that would have followed if I had opened that door and it came apart.
Haven't heard from Joe in a while, so I hope he updates us on the situation.

Re: 68 Rivited Gas Door
Dale,
The previous owner took off the flag emblem for replacement and/or painting of the lid. That is the problem with the rivet system. Maybe Ed would have the colors we both need in his collection?Terry Buchanan

Re: 68 Rivited Gas Door
The emblem is not the problem, or at least not the big problem. There is a very nice reproduction emblem (perhaps a bit too nice) available. The issue there is expanding the rivets on the new emblem.
If the rivets on the hinge are still good, I would remove the emblem, paint the door, and put a reproduction emblem on.
There is a drawing of the rivet spin tool (thanks once again John) in this link. It is certainly possible to have a machine shop make something like this.

I am working (not too hard at the moment) on a method of replacing the rivets on the gas door itself.- Top

Hi Ed:
I still have the restorable 68 lid you gave me at Carlisle two years ago to experiment with. I think the method I use on C2 lids can be adapted to 68 lids, but I haven't gotten around to trying it. Maybe this discussion will be the prompting I need.
As noted already, though, the repaired casting has to be painted body color, which makes the 68 lid more of a pain to deal with.- Top
