    '57 Fiberglass transmission cover

Does anyone know why the fiberglass cover over the transmission "hump" inside the car (under the carpet...) is held down with phillips-head screws and glued to the floor pan...? I can understand the screws - remove them and you could have easy access to the shift linkage and top of the transmission...... But my cover is tighly glued to the floor and screwed down!!!! I don't want to break the original glued panel loose from the floor, but this whole matter doesn't make sense....

    Anyone with thoughts on this.....?

both my 57 floorpans are as you describe. would'a been nice if they hadn't bonded the panel to the floor pan. mike

Both 1956 serial 2765 and 3218 are screwed but only a sealant was used.

Garry, same reason the inner fenders have screws. To hold in place until the sealant/resin sets up. JMTCW, Gary....

The tranny cover on my 56 (4363) is the same (screwed and glued). This is a VERY LATE (last week of production) 56 car.

Found the same thing on my 57 last year. Wanted very badly to remove it, but gave up - not wanting to damage it. I agree with all the comments posted. -Dan-

GC - thanks for explaining the General's logic on this...... this quetion dovetails the "screws-in-the-inner-fender" question I asked you in G'Burg recently....
