Nice pics Tom. The height of the the cut off camel hump is worth noting gang. See how high it is?
Also notice how large the GM logo is on Tom's 60. I see at least 3 variations on the size of the GM logo. Didn't know what was correct for my 63 FI car so just picked out the ones with the biggest font. John

        John,

I was aware that intake manifold gaskets had a unique feature on the carbureted cars. The TIMJG goes into this in the section on carburetion. I did not know the FI cars had these as well. The TIMJG doesn't say anything about these under the FI adapter. My car had all the FI intake gaskets replaced at least once by the time it came into my hands, so this is a detail I missed.

I was asking about the head gaskets. Were there any tabs that stuck out on the originals? I need to buy a set of gaskets for my 283 that is about to be reassembled. I am inclined to use composite gaskets because the block was not decked to preserve the stamp pad. These will be more forgiving than the stamped steel ones, which I think were original equipment on all Corvette engines in '58.

Hi Art, Wait for the engine guru's to answer your head gasket question. Personally I am not aware of any tabs that stick out on original head gaskets. Since everything is painted I doubt the gasket will be an issue but don't go by what I say. John

Art, Sorry, for some reason it got stuck in my head you were asking about intake gaskets.......
I know the steel shim type gaskets for the big blocks had a tab (with holes in it to indicate thickness??). I don't know about the 283's, BUT I have the originals from my 283 and I'll take a look tonight to see if I notice anything.

            Tom

UPDATE: I looked at the original steel shim head gaskets from my 60 and could see no identifying tabs or markings. Mine is a base 283/230 engine I don't know if the higher HP engines were different.

              Re: C1 Gasket "tabs"

I am virtually certain that all HIPO small blocks used the same steel shim gasket (which at some point were doubled up to decrease compression). If it were me I'd use a modern head gasket, especially if you won't be decking the block/surfacing the heads (which hopefully you are not).
