Steve, been around cars for along time, and I agree with Mike, fan belts are cheap,Fan clutchs do a few thing when the gone, generally when the bearing fails theres a alot of play in the fan and vibrate at cruising speeds , and, when the fluid starts leaking- The cooling of the engine slows and the car overheats. can you feel any play when you try to shake the fan blade? to screech on make a metalic sound from a fan clutch I would say it would be a rare one.

      Ed

Fan is tight. Belt is new and soaped, but I will try another one before I change the clutch

Joe answered your question about the "captive belt". About the idler pulley, I believe they were only used on A/C cars but not being an expert I could be wrong.

Steve,Try adding alittle more tension to the alternator belt first before you head out for a new belt.

Thanks for the education fellows on the captive belt. My frame of reference is the late 50's and early 60's before I left for SEA (until 1971). I still, using common sense, can not imagine an application of any belt not having a means of adjustment, but then that's just me stuck with my old ideas. Guess I'll have to pay more attention to some of the newer models.

Don't forget the solid lifter cars of that era.

Idler pullies were used on only 2 basic groups of applications. These were 63-65 with solid lifters (plus, possibly some 65-66 with L-79) AND 1968-74 big block with C-60.
