Gary, order a judging manual for the car and it will tell what you need to do to return to factory, also several books bookstores can get you or ncrs to help, good luck and congrats on car

          Hey Gary !!!

Welcome aboard !!!! Congrats on the new ride. If your car is super original, you might want to have your local chapter check it out before painting, cleaning and detailing. How about posting up a picture of your new car !!!

            Hi Gary,
Welcome, and I think it's great that you've found your dream car.
Along with Michael, I'd suggest you buy a copy of the 70-72 TECHNICAL INFORMATION MANUAL & JUDGING GUIDE to help determine just how original your car might be. There are 2 other publications you might want to buy to help you learn about and work on your 72. The AIM (ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION MANUAL), and the GM CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL. All are available from the NCRS store.
I'd enjoy seeing some pictures too.
            Regards,
            Alan

Gary, I too, would like to extend a welcome to the group. LOTS of great advice (almost too much to comprehend), but as already suggested, some research material from the NCRS is a great start. You will also find loads of good info by searching the archives for past threads. It truly is a sickness most of us are glad to have, and there is all the help you will ever need in this group. Congrats and good luck with your "dream car"!!!

                  Welcome, Gary!

All the above is good advise. There is so much knowledge here to benefit from. One small thing though, SAVE EVERYTHING from your car. You will be looking for it later as dated and original parts are more and more difficult to come buy. What color?

All these photos and not a single one of the right rear spark plug HEAT shield. Of course, it's covered by the right rear RF shield. Do you know if the heat shield is the type with the large hole in it, or not?

Also, something I happened to note in one of your other photos. Your harmonic balancer is interesting. It's not the one I would expect on a 1972 base engine. This balancer is a GM #3947704. It's 8" OD X 1-5/16" thick. This balancer was used for 1969-71 base engine but, according to GM as well as some past observations I've made of 72's, the 1972 base engine used balancer GM #6272221. This was a 6-1/8" balancer.

Is your car an early 72 that might have used the 71 balancer?

                            Joe,

Late 72, June of 72 build.
Heat shield has (IIRC) the hole just like my 71.

That balancer REALLY surprises me. Anyone else out there have a 1972 base engine with an 8" balancer?
