    Re: 1967 Bolt-On Screwdriver

Gary, you are correct. An original owner with a N89 screwdriver is a "sample of one" out of 720, but it's better than I have now.

It is very unlikely that an original 3885238 did not have an imprint since the detailed version of the engineering drawing specifies that the Manufacturer's imprint must appear unless an ECR (Engineering Change Recommendation) exception is granted.

Could there be a different version? It is possible since there was a prior part number to the 3885238, but the documentation I have indicates that the prior part number was superceded and was never sourced.

Today, according to communications with an ex-employee, they no longer make screwdrivers although they may have sold the name.
      Jim -

I spoke with an Irwin engineer who had access to their archives and old drawings back in 2004 or so, and he was unable to find anything in their files on that screwdriver. I was considering reproducing it at the time and found a source (in China) that would make them for me for about $3.00, but they wanted a minimum order of 10,000, so that was the end of that.

I sent the Irwin engineer some photos, and his response was that it was probably just one of their standard screwdrivers of the era.

These screwdrivers were common hardware store items. I have several of these in a smaller size. They are marked "Irwin 200-3". These were in a pile of tools left when my Dad passed away some years ago.

              John------

The part number was 3855238. As far as I can tell, it was a PRODUCTION-only part number and never available in SERVICE (from GM).

Yes, this picture was taken at the 2004 National, I'm holding the screw driver and can't remember who's it was. John will know.

                  John & Joe,

I have an ECR that has the engineering drawing as a second page. The engineering drawing does specific "Manufacturer's Identificaton must appear on this part; ommision requires approval"

It is also interesting to note that Screw-Driver 3855238 replaced Screw-Driver 3798116. Also interesting, is that Screw-Driver 3855238 was sourced to Irwin on August 13, 1963 for 1964 RPO simulated Wire Wheel Cover Assembly.

I would imagine the way Chevrolet worked was once they sourced the part, they issued releases against the PO.

Another ECR and memo link the 3855238 Screw-Driver to the 1967 N89 option.

I an trying to determine the imprint style and font size on an original. I have narrowed the style & font to two version through observation, but have not talked to an original owner of a documented 1967 with N89.

Any addtional suggestions are certainly appreciated.

I do have a call scheduled at 8:00PM tonight that may turn-up additional information.
