    1967 Bolt-On Screwdriver

Are you the original owner of a 1967 Corvette with the N89 Aluminum Wheel option? If so, do you have one of the 720 screwdrivers that came with your car?

I have gathered quite-a-bit of information on Screw-Driver 3885238 (as Chevrolet referred to it) including ECR's (Engineering Change Recommendations) tracking the history of the part, the fact that there was a previous part number, 38852338 was originally souced in 1963 and much more. The information I have gathered will be shared as soon as appropriate; however, I have some loose-ends.

One unanswered question is what was the exact configuration of the imprint. Since I have not seen a verifiable original, I hope an original owner will communicate with me to aid in my research. Other suggestions would be appreciated also.

Dan, the Bolt-On Screwdriver was common or flat, not Phillips.

John Hinckley has posted a photo of the real thing here or over on the Corvette Forum. I may have saved a photo and will post it if I can find it. Otherwise, maybe the archives has a photo.

Good input. I have John's photo and should talk to him about the origin of the photo.

I believe that the photo was taken at the 2004 National in Windsor, I can't locate the photo now.

Brian, Attached is the photo I think you are referred to and that John posted. I wished, I knew the owner and how he obtained the screwdriver.

This link has a small photo, not the one I was thinking of, but John H says he doesn't know enough to spot an original vs a repro, so maybe I was thinking of someone else.

Here's a CF link, though it's still not the photo of the screwdriver that I have saved somewhere.

I bet this is the picture you are talking about. I think this is the one John posted a few weeks ago.

Great picture - still need to know how the owner obtained it.

A documented original owner of a 67 with N89 option must be out there. He or she could certainly help clarify the font size & style mystery.

Jim, it's an Irwin screwdriver. Maybe the answer lies with them.

In the archives, John H said that Irwin didn't have the blueprints, so I guess only a real screwdriver will provide the information.

                          Paul,

Very simple, very easy. Thank you for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, Irwin Industrial Tool Company, which had become part of American Tool, was bought by Newell Rubbermaid in March of 2002. In September 2006, Irwin production was sent to Brazil. Today, according to communications with an ex-employee, they no longer make screwdrivers although they may have sold the name.

I applaud your efforts and not to rain on the parade, but if an original N89 owner is located and a font confirmed whose to say any other font out there is not original, ie how would anyone know every screwdriver was produced with the same font?

I know of at least one with no label that is though to be original.

                            Gary

                              Robert,

The engineering drawing exists and several of us members have a copy. A simplified version of the drawing is in Nolan Adams' "Restoration and Technical Guide - Vol.2", page 434.
