Re: C4 & Up Electronic Parts

As a recent purchaser of a 1985, 34,000 mile, well kept Corvette, I realized C 4's have their problems as well as other years. Some of the comments about C 4's in this thread have made me a little nervous, but along comes members like Peter who give me some peace of mind. I've printed this thread for future reference and will continue to drive the C 4. Love that car! Thanks, Peter for some welcomed clarification.

David I replaced my 1985's power brake booster several years ago. I went to Auto Zone to check out what they had. The Chevy dealers part was expensive.
Very surprised to see what Auto Zone had. It was a exact copy of what the factory installed on my 1985 and it was also made by the same company in Australia. Cost was just under $100.

Thanks for the information, Jim. Maybe we should start a thread on C 4 owners who have had success in finding parts and where they found them.

That would be a great idea.

I'm a newbie here on the NCRS Forum, and am working on my '85 restoration. A compiled list of C4 parts (electronic and otherwise) would be helpful.

Some pics of my '85 in progress are linked here:

Thanks for bringing this up, Peter. This is what keeps me off this board.

I make a concerted effort to NOT post on the board any longer. The main reason is EXACTLY what Peter references in his post above. People that think they know what they are talking about tend to annoy those of us that do.

There are a hand full of people that DO treat the TDB as a chat room. In thread after thread after thread. So many threads that start out with relevant, interesting, and educational content end up cluttered and destroyed by unrelated posts. Peeps loose interest. That's why most C4 threads die in hours on here. C4 guys that want to participate won't because their knowledge and comments get lost in the clutter.

I've owned and maintained an 85 since new. I enjoy my car, and while it's been far from perfect, I've had no trouble repairing it, or finding the stuff I need for it. I know an awful lot about the C4. I could contribute a TON to this thread. Particularly things such as most sensors, ECM, etc are the same as F-car, and the LT1 with B-car as well as F-car which they built hundreds of thousands of. So Joe is wrong. Many of the things that will render a C4 inoperable are not Corvette-only. There's a gillion F and B cars around.

If there is ONE item that is/will be a problem for functionality in the future, it's the Body Controller in the 90-96. They are already scarce. If I owned a 90-96, I'd be looking for a spare for inventory.

Peter, Thanks! Hint: There's a feature on the board where you can "ignore" selected user's posts. It helps eliminate the clutter.

With the ALDL cable and the diagnostic software anyone with even limited mechanical ability can diagnose & repair a C4 Corvette.

This thread is full of false, incomplete and inaccurate comments. I have spent the past 12 years restoring a C4 Corvette and approximately 10 very active years on the Corvette Forum. I can tell you that, while it may take some hunting, ALL C4 Corvette parts are available or can be easily rebuilt. These cars are really quite easy and inexpensive to repair IF you do your own research and turn the wrenches yourself. On the other hand, if you take the car to someone who does not know what they are doing and has few research resources, it can cost you a fortune to repair these cars. I have plenty of experience with GM dealerships, technicians and local repair shops who don't have a C4 clue. THIS IS THE REAL PROBLEM.

FINALLY - This is supposed to be a technical forum where like-minded members can get help from Corvette specialists with real knowledge. THIS IS NOT A CHAT ROOM ! If you don't know what you are talking about, have limited actual experience on the topic or have nothing positive to add, please stay off of this technical discussion board. AND don't use this forum to BASH Corvettes, especially when you do not have a clue what you are talking about ! If you want to gossip or bash Corvettes, try Facebook or Twitter.

                Peter and Johnny,

                WELL SAID!!!

I checked them out, awesome, now I want a C-4! I'm not afraid of finding parts, It sure wasn't easy finding several parts for a '73 454 either, so I have practice!

Re: C4 & Up Electronic Parts

Back when you guys ignored us po boys in our $2500 mid year big blocks, the statue was 10 years. I think in the last few it has been reduced.

Back then after the statute it was a business decision, bumpers were big business and they kept those tools running as they did for many parts on the 77 Cutlass which for some reason had a following.

C4 parts (as Ken says) are out there. The issue is you guys don't want to pay for them (the parts) or pay for a skilled guy to fix your car. I have a friend that repairs these and I see it often.

The next time you get sick, ask the guy behind the counter at your corner gas station to do the diagnosis, or do you really want to go see a specialist?

A Power train control module or fuel pump costs just like any other car $$$. So when you can buy a C4 for $8000, it sure seems like a lot to fix it because the mental model is that its a cheap ride, but you would have to do the same if you were replacing all that same stuff on a Caprice too. If you want a ride that lasts a long time you have to go blue oval, those F-150's 12 years old look brand new and have friends that brag about having 350,000 miles on them.

Oh come on Ron. my Caprices (both of them) have 224K on them and are going strong. I can replace what wears out on the cheap -- except good tires are NLA. The biggest challenge is keeping them from rusting, and I expect the blue oval crowd has that issue as well. None of the car manufacturers have a magic pill for that.

BTW: Please show me the statute that said 10 years for the parts. I want to see that one.

Terry both OE's have boats that will outlive their popularity as taxis, mentioning one was enough.

Start here...Magnuson-Moss Act then go to snopes and then you'll need to look some more. There is a implication it was deregulated in the 80's, but will take more work to find the regulation.
