Tim, if you don't remove the old flange then you will have another 1/4" of oil left in the pan when you drain it. I think the existing 1/4" is not good. The bottom is where all the nasty stuff lives.

To be honest I am going to try to remove the old nut plate. Is this spot welded and can it be done?

It is spot-welded and can be difficult to remove without causing damage to the pan.

I have been present at the "ripping out" of two oil pan drains - fortunately not to one of my cars.
In both cases, the cause was a simple one - the guy doing the oil change was previously certified as a moron - couldn't possibly get that bolt back in without the use of his 1/2" drive air rachet using 110 psi.......

The owner should have taught the moron how to dance...by carefully applying gun control with his semi-automatic Smith and Wesson.
