    Chrome Plating Company Visit Today......

Just wanted to let those interested know about a conversation I had today with the owner of a plating shop here in Florida. I brought some pieces there for quote and some items for plating.

Interesting when you hear how much these business pay for things to support the shop. Plating businesses have it pretty tough with fluctuating material costs. I can appreciate how tough it must be to keep prices for our plating needs reasonable, yet be profitable enough to make payroll, pay utilities, rent, etc, etc. I cannot imagine if these business here in the US were gone.

Example: This week they paid $12,000.00 for 2 drums of nickel. Last time they bought it it was under $6000.00. Nickel fluctuates like gold, silver and other precious metals. In order to keep their prices consistent for customers, they have to adjust the item cost with a fee, like a surcharge, to adjust for the fluctuations in material costs. This must be a nightmare to track.

Copper is another story in itself. The owner told me that the copper prices will be affected by the earthquake results in Chile, where most of our copper comes from. Story Here. Obviously we will pay more for that too, even though we'll never see it because it's under the nickel and the chrome.

Obviously, we as customers are affected by these higher business costs. If you're planning to have chrome done, now may be the time.

Not to mention of the cost of cyanide disposal. The cost of this equipment must be enormous.
      See it here:

I worked second shift in a ground rod manufacturing plant back in the late seventies for a year while I went to college. There was no chrome but the rods were plated with nickel and copper. Management was always worried about the material costs. It amazed my how many employees were stealing copper and nickel ingots. I had no idea where you could cash in copper or nickel ingots - The nickel was just a few ounces but the copper got up in the 3/4 pound range.
At one point the EPA was fining the plant $5,000.00 for polluting the ground water with heavy metals. They were hundreds of thousands of dollars in the hole due to fines because a two acre lagoon had a leak.
There must be money in for people to still do it but all those liquid caustics and acids are a nightmare

Have any of you had a set of bumpers done recently? I'm working on a deal to have mine done (62).....trading chrome for oil paintings. It would be nice to have some idea of how much art will be involved.
Shop owner's idea so it may work out ok.
          Any guidance would be appreciated.

            Sandy,

Yesterday when I was at Spacecoast Plating here in Melbourne FL I was quoted these prices for some 59 & 62 pieces.......(of course much of this applies to 58-62 as being similar configurations)

            62 Front Bumpers - $225ea
            62 Rear bumpers - $225ea
            62 Rear Center Lic Surround - $140

            59 Front Bumpers - $225ea
            59 Rear Bumpers - $260ea
59 Rear Bumper License Light housing - $35ea
            59 Front Bumperettes - $85ea
            59 Grille bar - $180
            59 Grille Teeth - $45ea
            59 Upper & Lower Grille Surrounds - $180 ea(these are pitted cores)
59 Rear Tail Light Housings - $100 ea(best w/lens brackets removed for better results)

Note these prices do not include any repair costs for bent, broken, or dented items.

I left 2 56/57 tail lights, very nice cores. $100 each.

Note that their item pricing has not changed much over the last 2 years, but.............Plus the additional haz-mat adjustment I spoke of, I think it's apx 12% on all pieces right now there. Us FL residents get to pay 6% sales tax too. At least I hand carry everything so I save on shipping costs 2 ways. I just try too do other shopping when I'm up there to optimize the trip, apx 25 miles from home.

One note for anyone sending out for chrome.....anywhere. It's highly recommended you clean heavy dirt, grease, tar, etc from the pieces. It makes their job easier, gives you a better finished product, and keeps their haz-mat removal costs down, which hopefully keeps our prices stable.

Advanced Plating did my original 66 rears for $550. $275. a piece for plating, they didn't need any repair work, just the plating and they are beautiful. It took about a month turn around time. I did use another company that I would never use again and that was Tri-City out of TN. Took over six months after a six week promise and the chrome came off in my hands in quarter size chunks. Returned the bumpers without, a sorry we screwed up and got charged for shipping both ways and waited another four months and the chrome came off again this time on the mounting brackets when I tried to mount the bumpers.

How prices have changed. In 1995 I had 11 pieces from my 59 done for $900 at Waltham Plating in Watertown MA. Beautiful job. They're still looking like when I picked them up 15 years ago.

2 front bmprs(one had a ding and one had some rust at the outside rear corner)
                1 grille bar
                2 grille surrounds (big uppr/lwr)
                2 rear bmprs
2 rear bmpr lic light hsngs
                2 rear bmpr verticals

Quick calculation, today with hazmat fee & tax it would be apx $2000...

How do you handle pitting? That is the biggest problem with chrome on castings. Does the plating shop fix that somehow, or is that to be fixed somehow by the customer? -Dan-

Cyanide disposal, handling and storage is the KEY to why various fire marshals combined with EPA agents have targeted local plating shops for inspection and business permit revocation all around the country!

                      Richard,
Just wanted to say thanks before this thread wanders off.......
Your list at least gives me some idea of what it could cost.....and I won't even have to raise the price of my trading stock!
                      Regards, Sandy

Dan, the shops I have dealt with over the years have done the repair. I prefer it like that and I believe they do also.

                          Dan,
I have used three platers and two I would not recommend, but the way Advanced plating worked was you send them what you want plated and they will call you when they inspect your parts and give you a quote on repairs and plating. They do all the filling and straightening in plant. I had no idea they were such a large plater when I used them, but since then they have been on TV car show circuit.

                            Dan,

I asked them this question just the other day. For pot metal, such as for the grille surrounds, they fill the pits with silver solder. I always thought they used copper, but now I believe that is only for steel. For badly rusted steel and for holes, they braze it using bronze. I had a set of 56 front bumpers done a while ago. Dents and rusted through in a few spots on one. They came out beautiful. From the back you can see the buildup of the bronze brazing. On topside, it's flawless. I just sold these a few weeks ago as I sold my 56 project car.

Thank You to those that responded to my question of how handle pitting and rust-through. I have had this question in the back of my mind for some time now. I will take your advice (I did not want to mess with these repairs anyhow). -Dan-
