If the aluminum valve covers were installed BEFORE engine paint, was the mask covering the intake manifold & valve covers consistent and tight enough that it would completely prevent any orange paint overspray on the front, rear and outboard sides of the aluminum valve covers?

It would seem to make more sense to put the mask over the top of the engine without the valve covers installed, paint the engine orange, then remove the mask and install the aluminum valve covers. At that point, there is still a bare surface between the inboard side of the valve cover and the intake manifold that needs to be painted dull silver, which would also explain overspray on the inboard valve cover gaskets.

Second, if the Thermostat Housing bolts are painted silver then the Thermostat Housing must have been painted after being installed on the intake manifold, but how did they get complete coverage of the Thermostat Housing without needing to then mask the front of the engine, water pump and bypass hose?
    Scott,

First pic is the low mileage 63 Z06 conv. engine that shows orange spray that made it's way under the mask/cover and on to the valve cover during the paint operation.

Second pic is a 63 340 HP engine that still has it's original valve cover gaskets. The engine has about 200 original miles on it. (long story) It was carefully washed and some of the dull aluminum paint has washed off but we still see the remains on the cyl head gasket surface and also some on the edge of the valve cover gasket.

      Michael,

Thank you for the great pictures, very helpful. In the second picture, the vacuum advance clip looks like it's black phosphate, under a painted intake manifold bolt. Is the vacuum advance clip called out somewhere in the AIM, installed at St. Louis? I found "Existing Clip" on Sect. 6, Sheet B3 (63 AIM), and in the 67 AIM (6-C2) it's in the drawing but not otherwise noted. I haven't found any other reference to this clip in the AIMs.

If it was installed at Flint, do you know why Flint engine plant would install the vac advance clip after paint, unlike the throttle return spring bracket?

        Scott,

I think I see dull aluminum paint on the top/hook part of the vacuum advance clip? It would have been in place during the dull aluminum paint operation.
