Anybody know where to get a original tar top battery rebuilt? or is there a better reproduction now, like the gel that looks like a 67 battery. Most the tar top reproductions don't last 2 years they are junk.

Re: 64 tar top battery
Don, I've had my Restoration ' sealed/maintenance free' battery in the car for 2 years, still going strong. Don't even bother with a battery tender with it. NO more corrosion either, repainted battery area many times before it, now it stays perfect. That alone is worth it!

Re: 64 tar top battery
Don, they are correct looking, even date coded, but have resin tops that wipe off and always look new. You will lose 7 pts from scrooge Judges due its construction without 'tar', they like to stick their fingernails into battery tops and leave little imprints to impress the poor guy getting Judged! They shouldn't remove any battery caps so whether it's a acid or dry battery will not come into play. Another benefit is you can turn them upside down and no leaky! Makes them much easier to install!

Dan
You say the judges stick there fingernails into the the battery tops.
I thought the judges were just to judge, not to touch?- Top

Re: 64 tar top battery
Agree with Dan; the gel cell batteries with the case on top is a great choice.
The judges can tell however the 7 point hit is fair.
You can tar top the battery believe articles exist on that, PS put finger nail mark in it when done.
As for removal of caps, a judge can request such. They did on mine, the first showed water however the judge was not to be fooled and requested a second which exposed a dry hole. Just did not have time to make all the cap show water before the show. And naturally was just busting the judge with the water hole thing - a knowledgeable judge will realize its a repo despite what tricks are used.
But as Dan has mentioned the lack of other problems associated with an original battery is just not worth the 7 points.- Top

Re: 64 tar top battery
I remember years ago Doc Gurdjian selling real tar top batteries, they looked so good when new but after you drove with them hey got 'salty' looking in a hurry. Don't know if Doc still makes these?

Re: 64 tar top battery
Well for once I read all the posts. Donald I see no one really answered your question. You asked "who can rebuild a tar top battery" . Not your exact words.
Jim Kane at Cameron Battery 205 S. Maple St., Emporium, PA 15834
814-486-0921.
He "may" be able to rebuild your tar top providing when he cuts it open it doesn't sell destruct. Like one I gave to Rick Alshire did. Course it wasn't the real deal but an old repro from PA.
My 63, the LWC has nice original tar top battery. Buttt it's coming out shortly as it's ouzing acid on top. But it gets no deducts at all. Yes it's full of CC's thumb prints and all the other nice judges. Whew!!!
I am putting in nice fake pretty repro. All sealed up. Saving the original tar top just for judging as it will save 7 or 8 points.
Restoration Battery has a very good sealed plastic tar top. Doesn't discharge at all. Sold by an old NCRS member. My pal Tom Kobman. JD- Top

Re: 64 tar top battery
OK, I want to know something here. Why does NCRS take off for restoration batteries and NOT for Restoration Radiators. The radiators are so far from originals that they can be detected at 20 paces. Not even close to original radiators.
What the criteria here?
Many and I mean many parts that are reproductions get 100% points and the batteries get deducted.
And yes, no judge is suppose to touch your car unless you give them permission.

Re: 64 tar top battery
JR not sure what the Restoration Radiator looks like however I have a Dewitts which was supposed to be like original! Lost some points for that one since judge could see the incorrect inlet fitting. So a guess, the judge just did not see (or know) the tell tail signs of a Restoration Radiator.- Top

Alan,
Dewitts restoration radiators are great however they suffer because the tops are sanded smooth and the numbers are engraved.
As far as I am concerned they are just as good as any restoration part on the market.
We need the Dewitts and many others that make parts needed to restore this old heaps.
BUT on the other hand Restoration Batteries are just as perfect as any part and needed for the restoration of these heaps.
It seems every few days someone is jumping on Restoration Battery and there is a lengthy discussion on tar and them not being original and taking off points during judging.
Restoration Battery is the only source (nearly) for batteries just as others are the only source for different parts.
Shall I point out ALL the different parts made by Trim Parts of Ohio, glass vendors, bumpers vendors etc. etc.
