It appears the flat surface on the exhaust manifolds where the choke tube goes in is not painted on the 3-4 engines nearest.

The engines were pass. car motors, 2 bbl intake manifolds , the 6 cylinder motors, were Bel Airs, biscaynes, or light trucks

It's at least 58 since those two barrel powerglide engines are marked with a "D" code on the ends of the heads.
There was a series of pics posted from an old Life Magazine issue in 59 showing the assembly plant operations. This is probably one of them.

Yes, but there was no "D" code in 57, it was "F" for the 2 barrel powerglide 283.

I have seen these photos before on the internet. If you do a search on the internet of Time Life photos for 59 assembly line photos they will come up. So to answer your questions these are 59's.

Keep in mind that there were differences in the engine plant assembly and painting sequence at the different engine plants and, also, changes which happened at the individual engine plants over the years. As a matter of fact, these photos were, apparently, taken at the Tarreytown, NY assembly plant which likely sourced their V-8 engines from Tonawanda. So, what is shown here are most likely Tonawanda-manufactured engines.

In 1959, the Tonawanda assembly process called for the installation of the manifolds prior to engine paint. However, the Flint assembly process installed the exhaust manifolds after engine paint. All Corvette small blocks were, of course, manufactured at Flint.

Just asking questions, but even though passenger car engines, wouldn't they have most likely come from Flint? And if so, does anyone know or have any idea of WHY they would have painted the exhaust mnanifolds on these small blocks, and NOT those for Corvette application?

Since these photos were taken at the Tarreytown, NY assembly plant, it's most likely that the small block engines would have been sourced from Tonawanda NY. Tonawanda, which most folks think of as the "big block plant", manufactured a LOT more small blocks than big blocks. Given production volumes of big blocks even at that time, I doubt that Chevrolet could have justified having a plant which manufactured only big blocks.

Are you refering to just 1959 Flint engines or all Flint engines?
