At a recent NCRS judgung I was told my 1961 needs a rear axle vent. I find two, one is metal (appears to be brass) and one is plastic. Which is correct?

Re: '61 Rear Axle Vent
if the rear is a Posi, then ya need the metal tube that exits the top drivers side of the axle housing. if the vette was a non-posi, then a small plastic breather inserts into the top drivers side of thje housing. mike- Top

Re: '61 Rear Axle Vent
For a non-posi the breather will be metal. It is quite small, and resembles a mushroom. (stem and cap) I believe the plasic vent is the currently available replacement part- Top

Re: '61 Rear Axle Vent
I changed out a non-posi for a posi rear end in my 62. The hole in the top of the axle housing was not tapped for threads. I used the CC fitting with the vent tube running over to the center section. I got a 1/8-27 NPT pipe thread tap at the hardware store and greased it up so no metal filings would fall into the axle housing. Make sure you get it started straight.
