Re: gas door emblem

I'm sure there was a special tool the factory used for these "spun" rivets. However, I've never seen one and I have no idea where one could find such a tool.
The thing that's always surprised me is this: the zinc diecast material that the emblems are cast from is usually quite brittle and not, at all, malleable like steel, copper, aluminum, and other metals. I don't understand how they ever got this to work. A problem with it is implied, though, by the fact that for 1969 they went to a more conventional fastening system for both the emblem and the lid-to-hinge.
They still used the idiotic hold-open and hold-closed mechanism, though. They finally got that right in 1971. I think the 68-70 mechanism was a "carry-over" from the GENERALLY same sort of mechanism used for C2's. However, for most C2's the fuel door assembly was received by St. Louis as a complete assembly from the supplier. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
