    C-2 Hardtop Wrench Identification

Is there any way to tell an original C-2 hardtop wrench from a reproduction?

Jim, yes there is. Please search the archives as this was discussed at length many times. There are also many pictures to assist you.

Originals have the words vlchek and alloy on the shank where the repops just have vlchek. Some originals have the vlchek and alloy wording on the head of the wrench.

I just bought a '67 black vinyl hardtop, so I guess now I'll need one of those wrenches. Where are they stored in the car? Thanks PT

PT, the wrench is stored in a small burlap bag in the glove box. I can't exactly recall, but if the hardtop is on or off the car, then a washer or nut may be in there with it.

If the hardtop is on the car, there will be two rubber sealing washers in the bag with the wrench (shown in the '67 A.I.M. in UPC 0, sheet C1 {Miscellaneous Shipping List}, P/N 3827499); they are referenced from section C07, sheet A6, item #23.

A 2-top car left St. Louis with the hardtop installed, and the rear hold-down bolts were inboard of the weatherstrip, so the washers weren't required. When the hardtop was removed, the bolts were removed from the top and re-installed, and the rubber washers were used between the bolt head and the ferrule to keep water from leaking into the rear compartment, as the bolts were outboard of the soft top rear weatherstrip; that's detailed on the lower portion of page 29 in the '67 Owner's Manual.

Thanks Harry and John, I didn't know it was that involved. I'm getting the car judged at the Gettysburg Regional in May and will just leave the hardtop off until that meet is over. PT

John, We have discussed this many times before, but it still seems funny to me that they installed that sticky dum-dum on those bolts to hold them on the hardtop, and then asked the customer to remove them for installation when the top was removed. Also original bolts that I have seen had ground off head surfaces and look bad. I know it says so in the owners manual, but it is still a hard pill to swallow.

                      Wayne -

I know, but that's the way it was designed. Probably why the vendors sell those slick little polished stainless snap-in buttons to fill the bolt holes - they look better.

                        Dave,

Here's a pic of one of the wrench's.
